Over the past couple months, I have been writing the Amateur Roundup here at Vurbmoto and it has become abundantly clear that kids who race motocross are the toughest athletes on the planet. You’re probably thinking, duh, we already knew that. But let me tell you just how tough some of these kids are.
Last week, I wrote about how Gavin Towers qualified for Loretta’s five days after going under the knife and having his collarbone plated. Gnarly, right? Well, let me tell you about Deacon Denno. Earlier this year, at Freestone, Deacon broke his femur while racing. On March 16th, 2023 Deacon posted on Instagram a picture of him lying in a hospital bed as well as an X-ray of his femur. If you have ever broken your femur, you know it is one of the worst injuries you can sustain. While it is not uncommon in the world of motocross, a broken femur is severe and usually comes with a very long and slow recovery.
Well, Denno qualified for Loretta’s last weekend at Ponca City, three months after breaking his femur.
To put this into perspective for you, I broke my femur on February 15th of this year. The first month I was on crutches almost the entire time, then I moved to a cane, and then dropped the cane by the time Nashville Supercross came along at the end of April. I am currently just over four months out of my injury and there is no way I would think about riding right now. I just took a look back at Deacon’s Instagram and I realized his first day back on the bike was May 24th. In just over two months Deacon was back on his bike and training. Two months post injury for me, I was barely walking unassisted, and his X-ray looks very similar to mine, so it is not like my break was way worse.
The fact that Deacon is currently riding is impressive. The fact that he went to Ponca City and won every single moto in Supermini 1 & 2 is absolutely unbelievable. Deacon went 1-1-1 in both classes, securing two tickets to the Ranch for the sixth year in a row.
Deacon, you a one gnarly dude that has gained yourself a new fan. I will be rooting for you at the Ranch this year.
