5 Things We Learned at RedBud

Deegan Making More Strides//Star Sweeps

The unfortunate start of the second 250 moto at RedBud ensured that the overall would be mixed up. Enter the rookie, Haiden Deegan, checking off another box on his list as he won the overall with 2-3 scores. His teammates Levi Kitchen and Justin Cooper joined him on the podium to make it a Star Racing sweep. Look, I know Hunter will be fine for Southwick, but Deegan has been very strong this year. It’s also quite impressive that if Hunter has an issue that a 17-year-old is there to pick up the pieces. Expect more of this on the home stretch as Deegan is only getting better. It’s crazy to think that last year he won the combine at RedBud and this year he won the overall.

Harrison Impressed

I’ve always kept an eye on Mitchell Harrison over the course of his career. You see, back in 2009 at Mini O’s I was walking the pits with some wheels and tires for Ezra Hastings, who I was staying with that week. Well, Mitchell, who was maybe 11 at the time, was riding in a golf cart and it pulled over in front of where I was walking and he asked if I wanted a ride. I jumped in and we introduced ourselves and he told me what classes he was racing and ever since I’ve made sure to see where he places in the results. Although he’s racing the Canadian Motocross Championship, he still made it out to his home race at RedBud and he finished 12-11 for 11th overall. Very respectable results in a deep class for someone who I believe should have a ride indoors and out in the USA.

Noren Kept the Tradition Alive

I wasn’t at RedBud this year and if you pay attention to anything that I do then you’ll know I jumped into the HEP Suzuki pool last year that was filled with pee and Marshal Weltin debris. Weltin unfortunately wasn’t at RedBud either this year, so we all figured this was a one and done thing. Sad. That was until I got a notification on Saturday night from my team over at HEP. It was a video of Freddie Noren jumping into the pool after a season best 7th overall. Freddie always does well at RedBud and this result actually tied a career best at the track. My only complaint is that the water Freddie jumped in looked like it was imported from the Swiss Alps as it was crystal clear. I will be speaking to my manager about this. Either way the tradition lives on!

Marsalisi Keeps Improving

It’s Luca Marsalisi’s rookie year and the Rock River Yamaha rider had his best race of his young career at RedBud. He went 17-11 for 14th overall in the 450 class. That 11th is no joke and it shows the progression that he’s been able to achieve at this point in the season. I think we will start to see more results closer to the top ten for young Luca opposed to the backend of the 15-20 group. I also think that Benny Bloss and Har Dog will be shaving his head for this result.

Who is Bryce Shelly?

Shelly turned pro at High Point and 20-24 for 25th overall. He’s from Pennsylvania and he has some support from Triangle Cycles and Fox, but other than that I’m not really sure what his story is. I did slide in his DMs to ask him a few questions and we will get this story to you as it comes available. Here’s why I’m asking who he is: he just went 15-12 for 11th overall at RedBud. The field is deeper now than it was and this kid almost got a top ten overall in his second race. This is why moto is so cool and it’s not everyday that you see a story like this. It’ll be cool to see what Shelly can do to build from this point forward. If he keeps this up he will be making a name for himself very quickly.
