Welcome to our coverage of the 14th annual James Stewart Freestone Spring Championship. This event took over after Lake Whitney went away in 2011 as a must race for the next big things in motocross. The classes are stacked and today we picked a few motos to give you a rundown on what happened.

Open A Pro Sport

We finally got to see the battle we all wanted. Gavin Towers vs Drew Adams. These guys went at it for 2 minutes plus a lap. Drew was able to pull the holeshot but by turn 2 GT Money had moved into the lead and held onto the lead for the entire race. Drew didn’t let that come easy though. These guys were wheel to wheel the entire time. Drew seemed to have the faster pace but just couldn’t find his way around Towers. Gavin had an answer for everything Drew threw at him until a lapper would allow Drew to sneak to the inside and Towers being held up by a lapper on the outside. Drew checked out yet again and pulled away by 4-5 seconds on Towers.

These 2 guys have set a pace that no one has seemed to match yet. Guys like Parker Ross and Andrew Short (yes that Andrew Short) didn’t have the pace the first and second moto but the 41 year old vet was proving he’s still got it. Ross and Short had a battle for 3rd but the Veteran was able to hold off the Australian SX3 Champion. Moto 3 should be a good race to see who gets the final podium spot overall with a few guys in position for it.

Overall Results:

  1. Drew Adams 1-1
  2. Gavin Towers 2-2
  3. Andrew Short 6-3
  4. Matthew Curler 4-5
  5. Parker Ross 7-4

250 A Pro Sport

Well, I feel like I’m just repeating myself here, but yet again Drew Adams was able to run away with yet another dominating win. No one has an answer for the Team Green rider this weekend and I’m not sure if anyone will. Gavin Towers and Casey Bernard kept things interesting for 2nd as Bernard pushed Towers the entire race but could never capitalize on a pass. I thought Towers had gotten 2nd yesterday, but due to some penalties, Towers ended up 8th overall 1st moto and with the 2nd place finish 2nd moto, Towers is only sitting 5th overall. So this 3rd moto is going to get good for those final podium spots. Be sure to watch for Parker Ross, Hayes Edwards and Casey Bernard who all have a chance at the podium.

Overall Results:

  1. Drew Adams 1-1
  2. Parker Ross 2-4
  3. Hayes Edwards 3-5
  4. Casey Benard 6-3
  5. Gavin Towers 8-2

450 B (12+)

Without a doubt this and 250B will be the standout classes as we talked before. I said there about 10 guys who can win this class and man did they mix it up today. Landon Hartz made the move from 125’s up to big bikes for Mini Os where he was able to claim a 450B title. Landon took heat 1 today and seems so much more comfortable on the bigger bike and is really starting to show he is one of the elite amateurs that we need to watch out for.

Two guys who I totally skipped on riders to watch for in this class are Diesel Thomas and Ryder Malinowski. Diesel and Ryder showed up and put in some work over some top dogs to finish 2nd and 3rd behind Hartz. The field is so deep in the top 10 with riders like Landon Gibson, Luke Fauser, Aden Keefer, and Logan Best who are all capable and still not counted out on winning this championship.

Results:

  1. Landon Hartz
  2. Diesel Thomas
  3. Ryder Malinoski
  4. Aden Keefer
  5. Landon Gibson

65 (7-9)

These little dudes were ripping. This was possibly my favorite class to watch for the day. Beckham Smith is so much fun to watch. He is so flawless on the bike and makes it look easy. Beckham was able to take the Moto 1 win with a huge 30 second lead. Carter Holmes, Talon Hinson, Ashbur Hall, and a few others kept things interesting for us behind the leader and put on a great race. From 2nd place to about 7th-8th they were dicing it up the whole race and made it super fun to watch. This is another class where we have about 10 kids who can win this, but first they have to stop Beckham Smith.

Results:

  1. Beckham Smith
  2. Carter Holmes
  3. Talon Hinson
  4. Abshur Hall
  5. Maverick Gresham-Lewis

250 B (12+)

Division 1 – Logan Best took the holeshot and led us through the first lap but he had pressure immediately from Caden Dudney, Deacon Denno, and Canyon Richards. Best couldn’t hold off Dudney long enough and Dudney made the pass and started to pull away from the rest of the field. The pressure for Best didn’t end there. Deacon Denno and Canyon Richards moved in quickly after the Dudney pass. After about lap 3 everyone seemed to settle in. That’s until Kade Johnson came out of nowhere to sneak into 4th and pass Canyon Richards. Richards seemed to fall off with 2 laps to go, I’m not sure if he had a mechanical problem or just ran out of wind. Best would hold on to 2nd with Denno finishing in 3rd right behind him.

Results:

  1. Caden Dudney
  2. Logan Best
  3. Deacon Denno

Division 2 – Luke Fauser pulled the holeshot, but behind him we got the battle I’ve been wanting to see. Landon Gibson came around in second and the chase was on. Alvin Hillan was not going to let these guys get away though. This dude was snappin. He was dipping and diving in and out of every corner trying to get around Gibson. About lap 3 or 4 Gibson turned it on and was pushing Fauser. As we are all locked in on this 3 way battle for the lead, Landon Hartz comes from 4th and throws himself in the mix. I think Hartz may have made a small mistake after getting up to the back wheel of Hillan as his lap time fell from a 2:03 to a 2:07. Things then got interesting. A lapper got caught up in a corner where Fauser and Gibson managed to escape but unfortunately Hartz got into Hillan knocking them both over. Gibson would crash not 5 seconds later of the pile up allowing Hartz and Hillan to get back by him. Fauser would coast to victory. Unfortunate for Gibson, but managing a 4th leaves him in a good position when we merge the 2 divisions.

Results:

  1. Luke Fauser
  2. Landon Hartz
  3. Alvin Hillan

Mini Sr 1 (12-14)

Division 1 – Wyatt Duff had a day where he found himself winning both divisions of his Mini Sr classes. Gage Dunham was not only showing his talents on the track, but if you were listening / watching live you would know he’s a hell of an announcer. Gage sounded pro up there on the microphone giving me all the details I needed to write these articles. Oh he finished 2nd in this division also.

Results

  1. Wyatt Duff
  2. Gage Dunham
  3. Maddox Temmerman

Division 2 – Division 2 was loaded with some heavy hitters. Ries Seeba, Ryder Ellis, Braxtyn Mes, and Tristan Prueitt. Prueitt was able to pull the holeshot but quickly fell back. Ries Seeba took the lead but was quickly lost to Ryder Ellis who started to gap the rest of the field quickly, running a 2:13 lap time. Braxtyn was also running a 2:13 lap time but couldn’t get around Seeba quick enough allowing Ellis to get out of reach. Prueitt is insanely fast but seemed to be a little off the pace of the leaders.

Results

  1. Ryder Ellis
  2. Ries Seeba
  3. Braxtyn Mes

Here are the results to every moto so far this week and tomorrow we start crowning champions!
