Mike Alessi gets the nod over my childhood hero Jeff Emig. It could be a bit of recency bias, but I feel like Alessi got the holeshot almost every gate drop that he ever lined up for. Don’t get me wrong, Fro was amazing at starts, so this one was very hard for me to choose.
I put MC at number three at a sleeper pick. I think not many people think of MC as an all-time great starter, but do you remember many come from behind victories from him? All I seem to remember is him getting a start, making a few passes as needed, and then he’d check out. I’ll argue with whoever wants to about this.
Jorge Prado has one million holeshots according to Clinton Fowler, or someone else who tallies this junk. I couldn’t leave him out.
The new king of the holeshot is Vince Friese. You better believe when VF is on the gate that he’s going to get the jump on everyone and make it a painful race for whoever gets near him.

Doug Dubach should be on these lists, the man pulled a holeshot on an underpowered YZ360 against JMB, RJ, Stanton, Wardy, etc. all of whom were on fire breathing factory 500s on a deep Unadilla track. Watch any race from the mid-late 80s through the early 90s and Doug was consistently in the first turn first against the best factory bikes of the day.
