Monster Energy/Star Racing Yamaha’s Colt Nichols underwent surgery on Sunday, according to the team, after injuring both arms in a heat race crash at the Monster Energy Supercross opener on Saturday in Anaheim.
“Nichols was looking to have a strong start, but unfortunately, the 2021 250SX East Champion had a big crash in the whoops while leading the first heat race and sustained injuries to both arms,” the team said in a press release yesterday. “He will undergo surgery today, and an update will follow.”
Nichols, the defending 250SX East Region Champion, went down hard in the whoops while leading his heat and early reports are that he broke both his arms and has a hip injury.
This is a brutal blow for Nichols and the team. Last week, Nichols teammate and 2021 250SX West Region Champion, Justin Cooper announced he sustained a broken foot and will miss all of the Monster Energy Supercross season.
“I have broken and dislocated 4 metatarsals and have some fractures in the center of my foot as well. Will most likely get surgery early next week,” he wrote on Instagram. “Not the way i wanted to start the year off, everything has been going really good until this. This is called a Lisfranc injury and will probably put me off the bike for about 6 months.”
We will update Nichols’ status moving forward once more is known.
