Vurb Roundup, Houston: Deegan Got That Corner Speed, The Shocker Survives and More

Since Monster Energy Supercross has started back up, I have been looking for a bit I could turn into a weekly column. I have not had much luck unfortunately, mainly because I’m not creative enough to come up with a name without completely ripping off other members of the media. Since there is not a lot going on here in the mid-Atlantic, other than Tyler Stepek sending this cornfield, I have decided to give it a go anyways in hopes that Slaw Dog [Slaw Note: We went with Vurb Roundup. Best I got.] can help me with a name for it. If anyone out there has an idea for a name, I’m all ears. Without further ado, here are my observations from Houston Supercross.

Haiden Deegan’s Got Corner Speed

There really is not a lot I need to say about this because this video from Bryan Hedge (@hedgehogphoto) kind of speaks for itself. You don’t see someone hit a corner like this often.

Max Anstie Does Not Need a 280 Kit to Go Fast

Unfortunately, there are a bunch of rumors flying around that Max Anstie was running a 280 kit in his Firepower Honda. Many sources, including Lewis Phillips of Vital MX and team owner Yarrive Konsky, have come out and said that was simply not true. In a post on the Vital MX message boards, team owner Yarrive Konsky stated:

“We didn’t get a protest against us, we made a mistake not taking our bike to the holding bay straight away post race. All top three place getters are meant to. Its our fault as we were caught up in the celebrations.”

Not taking the bike to the holding station is where I believe this rumor started. Anyway, Max was extremely impressive all day and I truly believe he will be a contender for the title this season if he can stay consistent. To Max and the Firepower Honda squad, congratulations on your podium.

Coty Schock Needs a Wile E. Coyote Butt Patch

First of all, I am glad Coty is ok and was able to continue his night making the main. Since Coty is from Delaware and Delaware is basically Maryland East without the taxes, Coty has a big fanbase in my neck of the woods. But in a very Wile E. Coyote-esque moment, Coty sent himself straight into the over under. In my previous article, “Who to Keep an Eye on in Houston,” I had Coty as one of my five riders you needed to keep an eye on. While this wasn’t quite what I had in mind, Coty still came away with a solid finish in 12th. Plus a few good memes. I’m glad to see Coty back and excited to see what he can make of the rest of his season. I believe he still has more in the tank.

Eli Tomac is Still the Guy to Beat

Even though the Triple Crown at Anaheim 2 did not go Eli’s way, he bounced back this week at Houston, just as a I predicted. I believe Slaw would call that a 100 out of 10 prediction. Starting the day off, I thought I may have been wrong since Chase Sexton was absolutely hauling in qualifying, his heat race, and the beginning of the 450 main, but once that red flag came out it was a whole different story. Eli stepped it up big time and was able to pull away from Chase for the rest of the main event. Eli is still the guy to beat in my opinion and Houston was a prime example.

Hunter Lawrence is For REAL

Another 100 out of 10 prediction, as Slaw would say, I had Hunter Lawrence taking the win at Houston last weekend. While he may not have set the fastest time in qualifying, Hunter brought it when it came to the night show. After about the second lap of the 250 main event, Hunter was pretty much checked out. Hunter is looking as good as I have ever seen, and I believe he will be your champion at the end of this season. Stamp it.

  1. Has everyone forgotten that Hunter made the statement last year ” I don’t care about qualifying” when the race starts is when he goes!!
