We are one round down in the SMX World Championship Playoffs and while we can’t take a ton away from the opener, I don’t take weeks off. I rise and grind. Grind and rise. Grind and grind again.
As a man of the people, I am back with MY GUTS Power Rankings after Columbus. I understand some will disagree with said Power Rankings, and I will absolutely take your objections into consideration. Please direct all complaints to [email protected].
Ok, now to the rankings.
5: Cooper Webb
I had Webb here to start the Playoffs as well. And he finished right where I expected him to. Don’t trust me? I wrote last week that Webb could get top 5s in his sleep and he did. Well, he was awake, but you get the point. Webb is very dangerous right now, as he sits just four back of Jorge Prado with double points on the line Saturday. If Webb feels the title is within his grasps, be aware: he’s very, very good in these situations.
4: Jorge Prado
Has anyone ever had a points lead that is talked about the less? Look, I get it. We had to talk about Deegan and Kenny and complain about the event and the track and team managers all week. Lost in all of it, is the actual points leader. I don’t know, maybe Prado made people big mad last year and they just don’t care enough about him? No clue, but not much talk about Prado this week. If he wins in LA, though, that will change.
3: Joey Savatgy
Long layoff, not much prep coming in, and not really on anyones radar…. yet, Joe Dawg goes out and snags a top five at the opener. He’s pretty far out of the title chase–currently 11th and 22 points back–but the good thing about the Playoffs: you can make up a lot of points in a hurry. While I don’t think Joey can get back into the points chase, I was very impressed with his performance in Columbus.
2: Ken Roczen
I’ve written a LOT about Kenny, but I’ll say this again: I’d be so pissed if I went and raced 22 motos, in the heat and Kenny came out and beat me after he spent the summer doing fun stuff. Hey, life.
Anyway, Kenny is VERY much in the title picture heading into the weekend.
1: Haiden Deegan
The best rider last weekend. Sure, it was a mud race, but guess what? He dominated two races in the mud. Everyone lined up in the same conditions, and Deegan flat-out crushed it. Your feelings toward him might sway how you viewed what happened last weekend, but strip all of that away and just look at the riding. Those were two seriously impressive performances.
