Haiden Deegan Breaks Collarbone in Vegas, Assessed Penalty for Aggressive Riding

Monster Energy/Star Racing Yamaha’s Haiden Deegan sustained a broken collarbone at the final round of the SuperMotocross Playoffs on Saturday night in Las Vegas.

The injury occurred when Deegan tried to block pass championship leader Jo Shimoda in an attempt to gain more championship points and both riders went down. Deegan immediately began holding his left shoulder and arm and was eventually taken off the track and to the Alpinestars medical unit.

Seth Hammaker would go on to win the race, but Shimoda finish second to claim his first career 250 title. Per the SuperMotocross account on Twitter, Deegan was penalized five championship points by the AMA after the race for his aggressive riding.

This could have major implications for Team USA at the upcoming Motocross of Nations where Deegan was supposed to race for the first time in the MX2 Class.

Red Bull KTM’s Chase Sexton, who was also named to Team USA, crashed late in the second 450 race and sustained a concussion and shoulder injury.

  1. Gary. He showed last night he was the fastest guy on the track. He was only out in this position because of kitchen. He is clearly the best rider. Hate him or love him. It’s just true. He will get a rude awakening in the 450’s and that will be fun to watch.

  2. They should have penalized him enough so he left Vegas with $0.
That was the sorriest exhibition of poor sportsmanship I’ve ever seen and I’ve been following pro mx since Gary Jones won his first title.

  3. Geeeeeeez weird ……..I’ve been watching racing my whole life , that was the first time I’ve seen any one act like that . Ricky Johnson and Jeff ward would never act like that .

  4. Geeeeeeez weird ……..I’ve been watching racing my whole life , that was the first time I’ve seen any one act like that . Ricky Johnson and Jeff ward would never act like that . I like Degan and really thought he was getting mature. He’s probly not going to pull that crap next time it comes up

  5. Life is full of choices. Deegan made a bad choice.
Imagine he blazes by Shimoda a a wins the race. He shakes Joe’s hand on the podium and waves to the crowd.
Class and sportsmanship would have earned you a lot more than $500k.
You would have earned respect and adulation of the fans. I get that you’re the fastest guy. Too bad you won a broken collarbone.
I hope you move forward from this mistake and learn some manners. Just cuz you’re fast doesn’t give you the right to be an asshole.

  6. Easy Gary, let’s not wish harm on anyone bro. Haiden is a teenage boy. If you have teenagers then you’ll know most teenage boys are clowns anyway. Add a ton of money and never getting his butt kicked equals a recipe for his ego to rule over his truth. It was the worst events I’ve ever seen in any sports. Literally he targeted , TARGETED, Joe and all he got was -5 points? AMA was soft in their decision. Cody Shock came back from a broken collarbone in a week. If Deegan is so badass then he should still be able to race the MXON. Hate it went down the way it did for everyone involved, the fans, and his team. More importantly, Joe proved he’s a class act. Congratulations Joe and Team Honda for an outstanding season!

  7. Sorry but AMA should kick Deegan out of racing. He was on probation for his antics and yet he runs people off the track and it’s ok? He is a safety hazard He thinks he’s entitled but there are others that are more fun to watch and they don’t have attitudes like Haiden. Maybe suspension for the first 5 races next season. He didn’t apologize for running over a rider. He is a spoiled brat. And so what if he’s a good rider, it doesn’t give him the entitlement to be rude and arrogant. Others who are winning earn it and are appreciative to the fans, their team and sponsors

  8. deegan is a pile. what happened between he and kitchen had nothing to do with deegan’s stupidity. he is an arrogant ass.

  9. Ty, I would love to know why “the best rider” has to resort to dirty race tactics every g*ddamn race. Why can’t he just win like Jet Lawrence did when he dominated the 250 class and then the 450 class before his injuries put him out of the competition? Deegan is just like Dale Earnhardt in NASCAR was back in his day. Always trying to take out Petty instead of just winning on talent. Dirty racing. And look where it got him. In the 250 moto2, in less than one minute of the last 5 minutes I’d the race, Deegan attacked Shimoda THREE TIMES (repeat, in less than a minute) to try to knock him out of the race, and then he finally did manage to knock him down, but wrecked himself worse in the process, with a broken collarbone and out a quarter of $1 million or so.

  10. Wow deegan should be ashamed of such poor sportsmanship! I’ve been watching supercross/motocross my whole life and have never seen anything so pathetic from any rider!. Even my 8yo could see what a joke his “racing” was. Bad for the sport, more should be done to keep the clowns off of the track. Good job Joe on winning clean!

  11. Hey Gary, first of all, stfu. Secondly, you’re a way worse person than Deegan is by the hate you have spewed and basically wishing death upon someone for something so simple as racing. Grow up and stop being a toxic clown pos…

  12. What a complete loser. That was the lamest riding I’ve ever seen by Deegan. Zero respect for his competitors, safety, and for motorsports in general. Anyone can ride like that… karma prevailed here but hopefully he learns his lesson before someone decides to end his career… I hope he sees this too – that ride was trash and I’d have zero problems showing up to Anaheim and saying it to your face. You looked like a little bitch racing your competitors like that… grow up before you hurt someone other than yourself..

  13. Karma caught up with Deegan he should have just won the race and proved he was the class of the field instead he just showed his immaturity and arrogance

  14. AMA should step up and give him a year suspension and a $400,000 fine for the way he kept blocking/crashing into Shimoda after being warned. He basically gave the AMA a middle finger. If any of the 12th on back riders did something like that to anyone on the track the AMA would be done with them for good.

  15. Deegan was an embarrassment to his fans, sponsors and America! ! Competition is expected and rewarded, however there are rules and sportsmanship on display. Riding for the us in Motorcross of nations should be out the window, as well as a hefty fine. You’ve been warned Danger Boy.! Grow up and act like a man !!!

  16. What horrible sportsmanship! An EMBARRASSMENT FOR THE USA! Glad he’s no longer representing.

He should have been suspended indefinitely!

  17. It’s undeniable—Haiden Deegan is lightning-fast on the track, a raw talent that turns heads. But oh, how I loathe his attitude! Growing up racing and idolizing legends like Jeff Ward, Johnny O’Mara, Rick Johnson, Jeff Stanton, Bubba Stewart, and the GOAT Ricky Carmichael, I saw competitors who embodied respect, humility, grace, and pride. They were grateful for their spots in the sport and pushed it forward with class. Deegan, though? He’s an arrogant, egotistical, spoiled brat—a glaring contrast. With so many riders dreaming of his position, his every word drips with disdain, showing zero respect for the men lining up beside him at the gate. I hope this break forces some serious self-reflection. That said, he can’t take all the blame—it’s clear bad parenting, Brian, has played a huge role in this mess!

  18. Any rider who deliberately tries to injure another rider should be banned. The spineless journalists who justify this unacceptable behavior by saying that it’s OK because of the prize money are unethical and totally lacking in integrity. Deliberately harming another human being for money is illegal and anyone who believes in upholding the law would take legal action against the Deegans. The repugnantly pathetic punitive action taken by the AMA signals to the public that they condone this behavior and they are motivated by money not ethics. It is also a clear indication that they are not at all interested in the safety of the riders. I suspect that they will will continue to support this behavior until someone is killed. In New Zealand we have a riders representative at mx/sx races who is responsible for dealing with this type of situation. Deegan’s sponsors need to stop supporting him and I will henceforth be making a point of not buying any products from companies that continue to support him. I have owned over 300 motorcycles so far and one thing is for sure. I will never consider buying another Yamaha for the rest of my life. If you are as repulsed by his behavior, use your buying power and stop buying products from anyone who supports him. Make sure you let your friends know this and encourage them to do the same.

  19. I have been watching motocross since Bob Hannah was racing. Haiden Deegan showed the worst case of poor sportsmanship I have ever seen in all of the years I have been a fan. It is too bad he feels he has to try to take other riders out on purpose. His father should sit down and have a very long talk with this young man. Haiden is a very talented, but his antics are just ruining his career.

  20. HEY DO U GUYS FORGET LEVI TAKING HIM RIGHT OUT WAY MORE AGGRESSIVE THAN HAIDEN WAS. HAIDEN IS BY FAR THE FASTEST RIDER IN THE 250 CLASS. HE LOST THE TITLE CAUSE OF LEVIS TACTICS BUT NO PENALTY. ???? BUT HAIDEN IS THE BAD GUY. AND GARY GROW THE FUCK UP WISHING HARM ON A KID ??? YOUR EITHER SOME PUNK KID YOURSELF OR A REAL PIECE OF SHIT OF A MAN.

  21. I am proud to see the outrage for Deegan. I have been a fan since Brad Lacky and Roger Decoster. I am surprised they did not black flag him off the track. But I am sure the fact that he has like 2m followers, that would not happen. At least the 5 points will cost him a spot or 2. And thats for his actions, is a good thing. I do not wish any one any harm. But I do feel the Collar bone is a Karma moment. Our best bet is just to pray for him and his continual learning. I do not personally care for him. I do not believe he should be a Champion. But he is fast, but his actions proves he was not ready for all of this. To much honor in this sport for a brat like him. But he is here, Maybe this will help him grow. Will he beat jet, I hope not. OR Hunter or Tomack, LOL Maybe one day he will grow up. Never hate, but chose not to support. Have a great day

  22. Everyone saying they’ve never seen anything like this. Does nobody remember Mike Alessi?? Remember when he took out hot sauce battling for the championship and then stood on his bike so Tedesco couldn’t pick it up. I forget who it was but someone on Kawi had to tackle Alessi 😂

  23. How stupid is Deegan, he has the talent but not the brains. He should lose his racing license for next year, so that other racers coming up through the ranks see that isn’t allowed. Just 5 point penalty wasn’t enough, they have to ban him. Just race your race and the results are the results. Thank fully it didn’t affect the results for Shinoda.

  24. Like father like son. I knew it was just a matter of time for him to show his true colors. wasn’t a big fan. I think he’s a great rider, but his character is crap.

  25. Deegan’s ego got too much of him and he put on a sorry display of racing. Not a very mature way to go down. Some lessons are hard to learn. He’s young and switching to the 450 class might humble him some and help him grow/mature.

  26. Team USA needs to refuse to put him on the teach healthy or not. That display was an embarrassment to our sport. AMA needs to step up. Minimum 1year suspension. I am a former AMA referee and can not understand how the AMA is not taking a stance on this. Anyone remember J-Law. Even he had more class than this chump.

  27. Not surprised by his actions. The whole family is white trash thugs. Jo Shimoda, class if the field in many ways. Congrats young man.

  28. Congrats Jo, you earned it! Deegan showed he has no class. Sure he’s fast on a 250 but you aren’t going to ride a 450 like that. C’mon AMA, you dropped the ball on this one. This event paid triple points, you should have docked him 15 not 5 at a minimum. His actions were blatant enough to at least a suspension so he can’t defend his SX title.

  29. 5 points?????? The AMA has set a new precedent and turned motocross racing into 2 wheel gladiator combat. Deegan is a great example of poor parenting. He has no respect for his peers and has no integrity.

  30. What would you do for half a million dollars? I would crash the whole field and punch my mother in the face. He had to do what he had to do. It just ended wrong for Deegan. Haters gonna hate

  31. The penalty on deegan should have much more severe. He intentionally tried to injure Joe. That was like watching a spoiled little child have a tantrum while riding his dirtbike. Just wondering if Jason Lawrence is his trainer?

  32. So this goes down in history as a championship race? What a terrible reflection on the sport! I kept waiting for a black flag and couldn’t believe this was being allowed! What a circus! Congrats Shimota!
