Eli Tomac Update Following Salt Lake City Supercross Crash

Update: Tomac posted the following on Instagram Sunday:

“Shaking my head on yesterday’s crash, but what do you do, it’s Supercross and stuff happens…totally hammered my hip on my bike and footpeg. Nothing broke, just muscle beat up and locked up again. Almost identical injury to Cleveland, but the opposite side.

Quite the up and down season, but the highs were higher than the lows and I’m totally looking forward to my @ktmfactoryracing barking outdoors”

Eli Tomac’s first Supercross season with Red Bull KTM, which began with so much promise with a debut win at Anaheim 1, ended prematurely on Saturday at the final round of the series in Salt Lake City.

After missing a few rounds with a hip injury, Tomac returned for his home race in Denver last Saturday and finished on the podium. He set the fastest lap in qualifying in Salt Lake City before his a crash in his heat race ended his night.

On the Peacock broadcast, team manager Ian Harrison said he took “all the impact on his hip on the foot peg, so that’s why he’s got such a dead leg.”

“So as you can see from this replay as Eli is going through this section He’s kind of buried in the start a little bit and it’s a split lane and as he takes off from this jump He gets hit from behind which took which he then loses control and basically Superman’s on top of his bike.

“He took all the impact on his hip on the foot peg, so that’s why he’s got such a dead leg. He’s also got a lot of scrapes and scratches on his stomach. So that’ll be the end of it for tonight for us. It kind of reminds me of the last one we had but it looks like there’s no internal injuries, which is good, and it doesn’t look like there’s anything broken in his hip right now.”

“These guys are tough and fit, so they generally heal pretty quick. But you never know until you’re a few days into it and then they can they can pretty much tell if they’re going to be able to go or not And if it gets worse, then of course, he’ll seek further medical attention.”

After the race, the team provided the following update:

“An untimely crash just moments into 450SX Heat 2, however, saw the 33-year-old unfortunately withdraw from the event, with the team confirming the decision as a precaution following a heavy impact to his stomach/hip in the incident.”

The Pro Motocross Championship kicks off May 30 at Fox Raceway, but early signs point to Tomac being ready.
