Eli Tomac Reflects on Glendale Supercross Crash: “I Put Myself in a Position Where Bad Things Can Happen”

Throughout the day at round 5 of Monster Energy AMA Supercross in Glendale, AZ, Red Bull KTM’s Eli Tomac was on fire. He qualified second and was the pre-race favorite to claim another win and further increase his points lead in the championship.

In one fell swoop, though, Tomac was on the ground and at first glance, it looked like his night was over.

Tomac was involved in a first-turn crash in the 450SX main event and was slow to get up. He dug deep to rebound to get 12th, but lost the points lead to Honda HRC Progressive’s Hunter Lawrence, who finished second to Ken Roczen

In a KTM press release, Tomac said: “I put myself in a position where bad things can happen. I got a little pinched at the start and then got taken out – so I don’t know what happened before that, all I know is, I was done. It took me a little while to get warmed up again, kind of got my body loosened up and going, and that’s what I had to get back to 12th. The good thing is, we’re not too far down – we’re fine – so we’ll just have to do some digging now.”

As we head to round 6 this Saturday in Seattle, WA, Tomac now sits third in points, eight back of Lawrence.
