The rise of Jett Lawrence over the past year has been astounding. That’s what happens when you win every championship that you can in the 250 class and then go undefeated in the premier class in your first outdoor series.
For the most part, Jett has been winning everything he enters, so for this column I wanted to dive into the races he didn’t win. I went back through the archives for the year and (spoiler alert) didn’t find many.
I excluded the Motocross of Nations for this list as well. It turns out that two out of Jett’s five losses in the past year were mud races, one was a Triple Crown, and one was a championship clinching performance.
250//2nd – Anaheim 2 – January 28, 2023
Anaheim 2 was a Triple Crown event. In the first race of the night Jett tucked the front end in a turn that preceded a dragon’s back. He would remount to third. In the second main Jett and Mitchell Oldenburg collide in a turn knocking Jett down. He would charge from last to sixth. Jettson went on to win the third main event, however his 3-6-1 scores would only get him second overall on the night to Levi Kitchen’s 4-2-2.
250/2nd – East Rutherford – April 22, 2023
This was a mud race and an East/West Showdown that Max Anstie took off with and stretched out a nice lead. With two laps to go Anstie’s lead was cut down to only 1 second and Jett was on his heels. This was the famous race where Jett blitzed the whoops to get on Anstie’s back wheel with two turns to go and RJ Hampshire came out of nowhere to power slide into home plate into the final turn. Both Jett and RJ went down, but Jett would remount for second.
250//3rd – Denver – May 6, 2023
This was a championship clinching night for Jett. He got a mid-pack start and just kind of let the race come to him, picking off riders here and there. He made his way to third and got the championship of course. The real action was for the lead with RJ Hampshire and Levi Kitchen. The two battled it out quite a few times, with Hampshire getting the victory on the night.
450//4th – Charlotte SMX Round 1 – September 9, 2023
This was the first time in Jett’s 450 career that he didn’t win, even though he moved up to the class full-time…in May. In the first moto Jett was running in the top ten and then crashed. He’d remount for seventh. In the second moto Jett would start within the top ten and then picked off guys throughout the moto. He ended up second. The 7-2 scores were good for fourth overall on the day.
450//9th – San Francisco – January, 13th, 2023
Not a great start. Crashed twice. Mud races aren’t always your bud.
