The defending champion is back.
After missing all of Monster Energy AMA Supercross with a ankle and foot injury that required 11 screws and four pins to repair, Jett Lawrence will make his return to racing at the Pro Motocross opener at Fox Raceway this Saturday.
On Friday, ahead of the opener, Jett spoke to the media in the opening round press conference about his return.
“This one took a lot longer,” he said. “It was a pain in the ass because it was interfering with all of my hobbies, so I wasn’t too pumped. Similar thing, coming back. Obviously I’m excited. I’m just looking forward to being back. It’s great in all watching great racing on TV, but you like to be apart of it.”
Asked if there was any sort of number or expectation he could put on where his prep is, he said “we’ll see tomorrow.”
Of course, everyone is focused on Jett going up against Haiden Deegan for the first time this weekend. When asked about the impending rivalry, Jett said:
“I think to be able to bring me numbers to our sport and grow it, its good for our sport,” he said. “I think people are finally seeing how sick motocross and super cross is. It’s great to have a new rivalry like there was with James and Ricky or James and Chad. A sport loves a rivalry and obviously Haiden and I are really close in age. So it’s like a perfect mix. We’re going to be racing each other for a pretty long time. It’s going to be fun, I’m looking forward to it. I always love a new challenge and learning a new rider.”
Lawrence has never lost an overall at Fox Raceway in his Pro Motocross career. He’s a perfect 8-for-8, including double overall wins in both 2021 and 2022 when it hosted two rounds of the championship.
A lot of questions remain as to where Jett is at in his recovery, how his season will go and more. But, as he said, we’ll all have to wait till tomorrow to find out.
