Eli Tomac Breaks Ricky Carmichael’s Record with Win at Daytona

Eli Tomac is quietly etching his name in the record books of Monster Energy AMA Supercross. With his win in Arlington, Tomac, who moved to the 450 Class full-time in 2014, became only the sixth rider in history to amass 40 wins in his premier class career. He joined Jeremy McGrath, James Stewart, Ricky Carmichael, Chad Reed and Ryan Villopoto on the list.

Well, Tomac further extended his legacy on Saturday night at Daytona. With his come-from-behind performance, Tomac captured his sixth win at the iconic race, passing Ricky Carmichael on the all-time wins list at Daytona.

The win was also Tomac’s 41st in his career, tying him fifth on the all-time wins list with Ryan Villopoto. He is now only three back of Chad Reed for fourth all-time. Crazy to think, but if Eli continues his pace through next year, he could catch James Stewart for second all-time.

“It’s unreal. I think back on it. I just think of this place and it’s one of those places where it’s either good for you or it’s not,” Tomac said after his win at Daytona. “It’s just been really good for me. Today though, I had a lot of doubt in my mind. To be honest, I was not feeling great in practice. I was dinking with clickers and going back and forth on stuff. I felt like I had my work cut out for me. But once the lights came on, I don’t know, it was like everything started working again. Six is crazy.”
