If you followed the SMX Next World All-Stars race at the opening round of the SMX World Championship Playoffs in Columbus last weekend and thought to yourself, “Man, I know NOTHING about the riders who went 1-2, I would love to learn more, but who do I do that?” Well, buckle up. I’m about to learn y’all some things.
First, their names are Kade Johnson (who finished first) and Wyatt Thurman (who took home second). And two, there is this app called Prospect. Within that app, we track millions of riders’ stats. Okay, not millions, but it’s a LOT. Wins, podiums, top 10s and so, so much more. From all that data, each rider gets a profile. Think of it like a racing résumé, except you don’t have to do any of the work. Well, except race.
From there, the Prospect Rider Comparison Tool lets you put any two riders in the database head-to-head and go way beyond what happened the last time they lined up. Career points, wins, podiums, average finishes, laps led, prestigious wins and head-to-head results are all part of the it. You can even see how each rider has historically performed against common competitors, giving us another way to compare riders who haven’t always raced the same schedule. Pretty rad, eh?
So, for this week’s Prospect Rider Comparison, I ran Johnson and Thurman through the app. That way, while watching the final round this weekend, you can look smart—or less dumb, depending—around your group of friends. Unless they already read this article. Then I can’t help you.

Overall Career / Rankings
On the surface, Johnson owns the deeper overall Prospect résumé. He currently sits fifth in the all-time Prospect National Rankings with 609,931 career points, while Thurman ranks 42nd with 403,714. Johnson also holds a sizable advantage in recent points, earning 48,762 in 2025 compared to Thurman’s 25,982, and leads 27,334 to 12,475 so far in 2026.
Despite the sizable gap in career points, Johnson and Thurman are separated by exactly one career victory: 195 to 194. Johnson also holds relatively small advantages in second-place finishes, 105 to 96, and thirds, 70 to 55.
Prestigious Wins
Those nearly identical career win totals start to look a little different when you examine where those victories have come. Both riders have collected two AMA Motocross National Championships, but Johnson holds a 19-6 advantage in AMA Major Event victories and a 16-4 advantage at AMA Featured Events. Of Johnson’s 195 career victories, 37 have come at AMA Major or Featured Events, compared to 10 of Thurman’s 194.
Racing Metrics
Johnson has considerably more experience in the Prospect database, with 900 career races compared to Thurman’s 623, yet we’ve already established their win totals are almost identical: 195 to 194. That gives Thurman a 31.14 percent career win rate, significantly higher than Johnson’s 21.67 percent.
Thurman also owns the better average overall finish, 5.30 to 5.79, and average moto finish, 3.67 to 4.45. Further, with the date available within Prospect, Thurman has led 32.71 percent of laps race, while Johnson has led 19.65 percent.
Common Competitors
When you have two riders who haven’t spent their entire careers racing each other, Prospect’s common-competitor data gives us another way to compare them.
Against Jesson Turner, for example, Johnson has raced him 219 times and finished ahead 121 times, a 55.25 percent rate. Thurman has faced Turner only eight times, finishing ahead three times. Against Nathaniel Orr, Johnson has finished ahead 188 times across 204 meetings, or 92.16 percent, while Thurman is 6-for-9 against Orr.
