Eli Tomac On Competing in the SuperMotocross World Championship: “More Than Likely It’s a No, For Now”

Eli Tomac seems steadfast on sticking to his Supercross-only contract for 2023 despite the allure of the SuperMotocross World Championship and the money that could come with it.

Following six years with Monster Energy Kawasaki, Tomac signed a one-year deal with Monster Energy/Yamaha Star Racing for 2022. He then proceeded to win just about everything: 450 Supercross title. 450 Pro Motocross title. The Motocross of Nations. An ESPY.

That’s part of the reason Tomac decided to return for 2023. But for now, it is a Supercross-only deal. In a recent interview with play-by-play broadcaster Leigh Diffey, Tomac offered the following:

“Winning never really gets old,” he said. “And I want to keep doing it for at least one more season of Supercross. So that’s where I’m at. When I originally signed this Monster Energy Yamaha contract, at the time it was a one-year deal and I did think that was gonna be it. But I had fun doing it, so I signed up another year.”

Even if he decided just to do Supercross, Tomac could still be involved in the inaugural SuperMotocross World Championship, where the top 20 in points combined from Supercross and Pro Motocross automatically qualify. In addition, if a rider wins a Supercross main event or a Pro Motocross overall, they will automatically qualify for the playoffs.

But, for now, Tomac said he probably won’t be competing.

“I wish I could say yes right now, but more than likely it’s a no, for now,” Tomac said in the interview.

This will be an interesting storyline to follow next year. Check out the full interview below.
