The AMA has released their post-race penalty report from round 5 of the 2025 Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship in Tampa and Red Bull KTM’s Chase Sexton has been fined for refusing a broadcaster interview and for a violation of the code of conduct policy.
To steal a line from Troy Dog: Holy Marshawn Lynch, this can happen!? Well, it just did.
This isn’t the first time this has happened though. While this is standard in most stick and ball sports, this is a relatively new rule in Monster Energy AMA Supercross. Last year following Anaheim 2, Cooper Webb was fined for the same reason.
According to the AMA rulebook, the first offense in refusing a broadcaster interview results in a $1,000 fine.

It was not noted what the Code of Conduct violation was, but we are assuming it was #3 listed below: Failure to complete media obligations as outline in the rulebook.

Also of note, Daxton Bennick, who finished second in the 250SX main event, lost five championship points and a purse deduction equal to two positions for jumping on a red cross flag/lights. Justin Hill was docked one position–moving him from 9th overall to 10th overall–in the 450 Class for cutting the track.
Below is the official release:

You know the rules. Now pay the piper
I think If a guys not feeling it why is he obligated to a forced Interview? Racings hard work, and sometimes you don’t want to be jawjacking after, you just need to calm down, get your heart rate down, cool off,re-energize. I don’t think it should be an absolute requirement, and I certainly don’t think there should be fines for refusing.thats some lame ass corporate trash if you ask me!! If a guy wants to,great,if he don’t want to,that’s fine too!!!!
Ur always in the spotlight. Ur being paid crazy money so suck it up buttercup. I believe in ama rules,n still do. Pay the fine
This is America. Freedom of speech. NASCAR violates the racers 1st ammendment Constitutional rights also. These race organizations and the media would be nothing without these top athletes.i watch these races on channels I have to pay for. The last thing i want to hear the next day is that one of my favorite riders was fined for saying poop or something. But for saying nothing at all?
This has got to be the most ridiculous rule I have ever heard of! This is “forcing” a rider against his will to be a guinea pig to the media and answer their repeated stupid questions.
Just start dropping f bombs like Tony Stewart did!! Problem solved!!
That is a good lawsuit you can make a rule that violates your amendments this rule is violating quit a few of them hope they look in to that bull shit rule
I think it’s what he and they all sign up for. He has a contract that states he has to do it, he could have not signed it. He didn’t. So he has an obligation per their agreement. He can have his days where he doesn’t want to interview, they all can, however, you’ll be fined. If they don’t like it they can quit. And promise someone will take his position and do the interviews.
The way to protect your right is to simply say I need time to comment appropriately please come back later and I will take the interview.
Everyone saying it violates its constitutional rights I’d be willing to bet one of his paychecks he signed an agreement stating that he was obligated to do post-race interviews private employment and all that
Well here we go. AMA pulling a nascar. Way to start ruining the sport. If Chase doesn’t wanna talk then leave him be. He’ll explain later.
I’ll reiterate what a few have said. It’s in their contract. I get being wrecked after a race. (Tired) and not wanting to deal with anything except drinking some water to rehydrate and just chill. I understand that completely. However, you signed a “contract” if the contract states as such well. Do a quick interview and get to the trailer. Or keep walking to the trailer with said broadcaster in tow. And answer a few questions. Be polite say I apologize but I need to get into my race trailer. Your ammendment rights, well… you don’t have any when you sign on the line.
Whether we disagree or agree with the rule it’s a rule and a rule that was known you can choose not to race the series if you don’t agree with the rules but that being said what I would like to see is the AMA/feld needs to get up on board here with these lapped riders if they do not move to the side not just hold their course but move to a slower move out of the brace lane they should be fined first time second time disqualified third time kick them the hell out of the AMA in reality the 450 class should be nothing but top notch riders no b class qualifying nothing that’s for the 250s The 450 is the premier class of our racing it should remain that and be only premier riders
My question is how do you define a “broadcaster?” Is that the official network employee like Jason Thomas, or does it apply to all news media? If it’s JT then I can understand that it would carry an obligation since there are contractual obligations and rule book obligations. I’d love to know what happened. I’m sure if we heard the entire story behind it, I think it would be understandable. Hey if Chase was not in the mood it might be a well spent fine too. Better to spend a thousand than ruin your and your teams reputation. Let’s move on. Detroit!!
To everyone spewing the U signed a contract argument the riders really have no other option. Not signing, being relegated to local races is not a realistic option. The AMA used to have a rule forbidding racing non AMA events (i believe the day before a national) prior to a national citing a rider could get injured and miss the national the AMA has promoted that said rider would be competing in which goes against a person’s right to work. The rule was challenged and is no more. It’s naive to think all rules are good ones. I thought only the top finishers were contractually obligated to do interviews.
Top three finishers
A lot of you guys know motocross better than you do the Constitution. The first amendment applies to reprisal from the GOVERNMENT, not from private entities, even those funded with federal and state tax dollars(i.e. school systems). It certainly does not apply to private sector employers.
The ama fuckin sucks
Here we go, now the best sport in the world is being over taken by media. Let these guys ride. Should be up to them if they want to give an interview. When someone refuses, that should tell you enough about how they’re feeling. Then to make it worse, they are being forçed to talk about something they don’t want to talk about. Then possibly saying something they are going to get fined over. It’s a lose lose situation.
Just because something in a contract. Doesn’t mean it not breaking your constitution rights. I’m not a lawyer. But if they put in a contract something that illegal and then say ,sign or else. That a breach ! That how people get out of NDA ‘S
That’s super lame. Unless he does this allot and we don’t hear about it, I always hear him being honesty and up front at press conference, podium, etc. I would think this would happen if had made a habit of it, but for sure leave the guys alone on the line. “ what’s it going to take to win tonight with Eli going so fast and after your crash in the whoops?” I’d want to shoot you on the line of a vet b race in the middle of nowhere, let alone in pro supercross.
Chase was being a bitch because Stewart was and did make him nervous. Chase laid it down simply because Stewart was going to pass him and that Husky was barking on his rear tire .
WHAT EXACTLY IS ama bringing to the event other than a hard time .and to the guy that commented about lapped riders getting fined for not moving to the right that is bull they paid the same entry fee as everyone else and they qualified for the big show, now everybody out there is raceing if you want to get around a lapper show skills to get around him itshouldnt be given that might make the guy that got a good start and checked out have to hold up and the second place rider catches him now we have a great race instead of the same old crap give the lappers there chance to race and get better and maybe shake things up a bit.
The AMA has been over regulating the sport forever ! The only way to change things is for the riders to band together , ask Kenny Roberts !
I agree that it should be a riders choice to interview or not something should be done about that rule the other stuff jumping on a medic flag I agree with cutting track I again agree with but not interviewing no definitely not 🚭
Hey Chase, send them a thousand dollars in pennies 😁
