One race, two titles. That is what awaits this Saturday in Las Vegas as the arduous 31-round SuperMotocross Championship wraps up in Sin City. A unique points structure has resulted in two nearly winner-take-all scenarios entering the finale.

Today, we look at how things could unfold in the 450 division.

The Contenders

1: Jett Lawrence | 91pts

2: Hunter Lawrence | 85pts

3: Eli Tomac | 75pts

For the second time in two years, it will be a family affair between the Lawrence bros for the title with a bit of Eli Tomac thrown in the mix. Due to the unique points structure, with the final awarding 75 points to first and 66 to second, if either Jett Lawrence or Hunter Lawrence win in Las Vegas, they will be the 450SMX Champion, no matter what anyone else does. While it may be a long shot, Tomac is still very much alive, but he needs help. If he wins, he would need Jett to finish outside the top three and Hunter to finish third or worse.

Who is most likely to win the title?

My heart wants to say Hunter, because he truly deserves a title the way he’s been riding the last two years. He is so talented, but like those that had to go up against the likes of McGrath and RC and so on, he is facing an immovable force in Jett. With the way the points shake out this weekend, this may be his best chance. He doesn’t need “help”. He just has to win.

And, yet, my head says Jett. Unless he struggles with starts again (could happen), I just think he will be too much to handle over two races on Saturday.

Will we see any “fireworks” between the trio?

No. Two are brothers and all three have massive respect for each other. This isn’t the same scenario in the 250 Class.

Who could play spoiler?

Malcolm is banged up. The Coopers (Webb and Justin) haven’t been as sharpe as usual. AP is out, so I think this is limited to three riders: Tomac (duh), Chase Sexton and Ken Roczen. All three can win on any given night still and could toss a wrench in this title fight. If I had to pick one, I’ll go with Eli only because he is still in the thick of this and is in a must-win situation.
