Julien Beaumer Is Ahead of Schedule and in the Championship Hunt

Even Julien Beaumer himself didn’t think he would be in this position.

After suffering a burst fracture in his back at the first round of the SMX Playoffs last year, Beaumer chose to take the long road back to recovery, which meant missing all of Monster Energy AMA Supercross.

After months away from racing, the Lake Havasu native shined at the opening two rounds, finishing a surprising fifth overall at the season opener and then following it up with his first carer podium at Hangtown.

But those were West Coast rounds. As the series headed East, surely Beaumer would tail off?

Not so fast. At High Point on Saturday, Beaumer continued his hot start to the season and went 2-2 for second overall behind Cole Davies.

With Levi Kitchen and Seth Hammaker struggling, Beaumer is now right in the thick of the title chase as he sit just two points back of Kitchen heading into the break.

A position even Beaumer didn’t think was possible.

“I don’t think I’d have a reaction,” he said after High Point when asked if he thought he would be in this position. “I didn’t think it was possible. We came in with a plan, coming off the injury, that we wanted to just see where we were at the first four rounds and then have a plan coming out of the break. We’re what, two points down now? We’re not really looking at the championship. We are not really focused on that right now, but we have a plan to come out swinging after the break. I think we’re in a really good spot and we made it through the ‘building’ and ‘seeing where we were at’ process of this thing.”

Whether Beaumer wins the championship or not, that he’s even racing and in this position is a victory. But, is this the best version we’ve seen?

“I think it’s the best version that we’ve seen,” he said. “I don’t think it’s the best version of myself, yet. We did make a lot of strides with the bike and I haven’t, I’ll be honest today, I didn’t touch my bike once. We checked tech this morning and that was about it. We’re in a good spot with the bike. I’m really strong. I put in a good base camp when I was hurt and my body’s really good so I’m not too worried about that, but I think we can still get a little bit better and obviously each week is going to see an improvement I think. I get to ride a little bit more with this off week, get some more training in and I think coming into RedBud, I’ve got my sight set on trying to get a win. I’m happy with where we’re at, the bike’s good. I’m not going to change anything and going to try and get a little bit stronger in this break.”
