Morning Espresso: We Need More Triple Crowns; Daniel Blair on Leaving NBC and an All-Time Jordon Smith Story

Welcome to my Morning Espresso. A collection of thoughts and stuff I found interesting on the Interweb. Enjoy!

We Need More Triple Crowns!

If you watched the racing on Saturday and didn’t leave with the thought that we need more Triple Crowns, then I feel sorry for your family. You must not be fun to be around.

While there are holes in the format, overall this is a much, much better product. Three races that actually make a ****, shorter mains which typically means closer racing and more track time for the stars of the sport. While I understand having 17 Triple Crown events is unobtainable, I think I’ve found a formula that works.

In the past, I know Supercross has not wanted to use two race formats to distinguish itself from Pro Motocross, but with the relationship now all for one, one for all, why not implement a few races with two mains? What about a few SuperPoles? All could enhance the product for the viewers.

So, here is how Monster Energy AMA Supercross COULD look:

7 rounds of Standard Supercross (with a twist)

Look, heat races are boring and mean nothing. The top riders cruise around and advance to the main. Hold those during the day or something. Replace the heat races in the night show with SuperPole racing that awards points, etc. Having Eli vs Ken vs Jett would totally suck, right? The rest of the racing would be standard Supercross format.

5 rounds with Two Main Events

Pro Motocross format transferred over to Supercross. Qualifying and the LCQ would determine gate picks and we hold two mains per class with Olympic style scoring.

4 Triple Crown Events

The only change that needs to be made is somehow weighting the points so the last race means more for the overall. The rest is great.

There you go, your new Monster Energy AMA Supercross.

Daniel Blair on Leaving NBC

Daniel, to me, is one of the best announcers in the sport. That is not to take away from anyone else, I just like him. He’s well-informed, could do the play-by-play or the analyst role, and is clear and concise is his points. When he left his role in Supercross, I think we lost someone that could have been special.

Until now, Daniel never talked much about his reason to leave. On a recent episode of Gypsy Tales, he told the story…

This Jordon Smith Story Is All-Time

Bobby Regan, owner of the Star Racing team, is a gem. If you’ve read about Bobby at all, you know he is a no-nonsense type of guy. He will shoot you straight and doesn’t hold much back.

Jordon Smith, who left Star for Triumph this off-season, was on PulpMX Monday and told maybe the greatest Bobby story in history.

How KTM Won Dakar

Cool video from KTM after winning Dakar with Daniel Sanders, the 20th for the brand.

Nasty!

Crazy crash for the defending MotoGP World Champion in preseason testing in Sepang, Malaysia, on Wednesday.
