Kyle Peters Wins Fifth Arenacross Championship

Phoenix Honda’s Kyle Peters won his fifth consecutive AMA Arenacross Championship on Friday night in Las Vegas.

This fifth championship was definitely not an easy one to achieve. Peters had to fight through some new competitors, including Ryan Breece, who wasn’t even originally supposed to race the entire series.

Breece caught fire and at one point of the season won eight main events in a row. Peters had to fight through a hand injury and he made the decision to switch from a 250 to a 450 and vice versa at certain points as well. Peters kept digging despite things not going in his favor.

The penultimate round happened to be at Daytona on one of the softest, roughest tracks, we’ve seen in AX. The track was made out of sand and carnage followed. Breece had his struggles with mistakes and so did Peters. Breece’s bike had some issues as well in one of the races and he had to limp it home while the thing was blowing smoke all over. However, when the smoke cleared, more luck seemed to go Peters’ way as he left with an eight point lead over Breece.

Eight points was a manageable enough lead for Peters to come into the Vegas finale and be consistent enough to bring the title home.

Breece did what he could as well in the final round going 1-1 on the night, but KP was right behind him with 2-3 finishes. Marshal Weltin finished third with a 3-4 on the night. It was an epic conclusion to a long five month season. A season that saw a lot of growth in the series. Peters won the championship by only five points over Breece.

This fifth championship now puts Peters on the pedestal with Arenacross greats Dennis Hawthorne and Buddy Antunez who have also won five straight championships in the series.
