When you look through the results from the opening round of Pro Motocross at Fox Raceway, Joey Savatgy’s eighth might not seem crazy. Joey’s a top guy, he should be getting top 10s, right?
Well, there is a bit more to the story.
This was the first Pro Motocross race on a 450 for Joey since Ironman 2022. He missed outdoors in 2023 and then rode the 250 Class for Triumph last year.
So, yeah, good result.
Then, you look a bit further and realize he rode to those results with a broken finger sustained in qualifying, per his post on Instagram this week.
“Welp lol. P8 on the day. Hit a flashing medic light thing 2nd lap of second timed practice, broke my finger😵💫😵💫. Was a day of grinding lol. Onto the next. Thanks team 🫡”
Joey elaborated more in the Quad Lock Honda post-race release and team principal Martin Davalos echoed that Joey showed a lot of heart this past weekend.
“Breaking my finger in Q2 wasn’t ideal, but there are a lot of positives to take from the weekend,” said Savatgy. “This is the team’s first full motocross season, and we’ve been working hard with Factory Connection to gather data and improve. The bike is solid. I know there’s more in the tank.
“I need to keep building my speed, especially as I’m still coming back from my Supercross injury,” he continued. “At the same time, we’re working on refining the bike. Jett [Lawrence] has proven what it’s capable of, and I know we can close the gap. We beat several factory riders this weekend, and that’s something to be proud of.
“Joey showed a lot of heart this weekend,” said Davalos. “He rode through real pain and still delivered a strong result. We’re on the best bike — Jett is proving that, and so are we in the privateer ranks. We’re here to earn respect, push for results, and grow every weekend.”
