As you may have known from the broadcast, the legendary Rick Johnson was in attendance for the Thunder Valley National.

I was scrolling through reels last night and came across one that RJ himself put up on his Instagram. In the video RJ comes up to shake Hunter Lawrence’s hand while he’s on the podium. Hunter gives RJ a big thumbs up and walks away pretty quickly.

I get it. It probably wasn’t the best time to run up to say congratulations as Hunter was probably rushing around trying to get his TV interview in. Not to mention, mix that with a 1000 heartbeat per minute battle royal with his little brother that happened three minutes before this. However, with that being said, IT’S RICK FREAKING JOHNSON!!!

If that were me I would have gotten a running start and jumped off of the podium like a stage dive and hoped RJ would have caught me in that moment. Yes, he would have caught me too, like I said, IT’S RICK FREAKING JOHNSON!!!

RJ has been around long enough to know when the right place and the right time for things is and he felt this was a perfect opportunity to strike with a handshake.

As president of the HL Fan Club here lately, I want to give Hunter the benefit of the doubt here. I can understand being overwhelmed with your first 450 win, but you know who that is. You train with Johnny O’Mara. These guys paved the way so that you could run.

This entire deal feels awkward anyway. Like, why did RJ post this video in the first place? It paints Hunter in a bad light after one of the best racing weekends of his life.

For you millennials who DON’T know who RJ is:

1.) Ask your Grandma or your mom, that was their favorite rider back in the day.

2.) Peep the stats.

  • 5-time AMA Pro Motocross Championships 250MX Champion (1988, 1987, 1987, 1986, 1984)
  • 2-time Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championships 250SX Champion (1988, 1986)
  • 3-time AMA Pro Motocross Championships 250MX Runner-Up (1988, 1986, 1982)
  • 33 career AMA Pro Motocross Championship 250MX Wins
  • 28 career Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship 250SX Wins
  • 3rd on the all-time 450 wins list
  • 8th on the all-time 450SX wins list

It’s giving cringe and I don’t think I can watch this anymore. My only hope is that after the race these two were able to link up for that handshake. You’re really going to leave Bad Boy hanging like that bro?

  1. In Hunters defense…..if there is one…Hunter wasn’t born yet when Rick was winning championships. Still he should know the history. But just maybe in the moment he didn’t realize who he was.

  2. Johnny o Mara trains them. So they know who RJ is. Hunter straight messed up. Those brothers don’t wanna end up like JMB. He was hated in the USA

  3. My guess is RJ thought it was funny. The real real question is, why are you guys s#¡tposting about it? Hunter’s mind was going a million mph, dollars to donuts from his angle it looked like Rick was giving him a thumbs-up, so he returned it. Quit trying to cause trouble.

  4. And he had a hat and shades on, he probably DIDN’T recognize him with a quick glance like that.
