How Rare Is a Jett Lawrence Loss? Washougal Was Just the Second in His Career

Three riders have beaten Jett Lawrence in a 450 moto in Pro Motocross: Hunter Lawrence (his brother), Chase Sexton and Eli Tomac. That’s the list.

One rider has beaten Jett Lawrence for an overall in the 450 Class: Chase Sexton. That’s the list.

In just his third race since returning from being “banged up” Sexton, for only the second time since Jett moved up in 2023, beat Jett for the overall at round 8 in Washougal, WA, on Saturday. And it was an instant classic.

In the first moto, the two were engaged in an all-out war, with Sexton leading the way until Jett lost traction in a right-hander and went down, handing second place to Tomac. Sexton would win the moto, with Jett taking home third, his worst moto result since the opening moto at round 2 at Hangtown.

“I just tried asking too much. Once I got up I tried getting into a flow again and I wasted two laps and Eli was already gone, he was riding fast,” Lawrence said in the post-race press conference regarding the first moto. “Trying to get that flow back, I’d pull him in then hit lappers. But I’ve had a really good run, and you can’t win everything. Winning always comes to an end at some stage, so I’m happy with a second, and to have at least rebounded in the second moto and get that win.”

The second moto was even better. The Lawrence brothers, Sexton and Tomac were all fighting for the lead until a red flag came out, prompting a restart. When the racing resumed, Jett would eventually take control and win the moto. But, for only the second time in his career (!!!!!), he would lose the overall as Sexton finished second to clinch his first overall of 2025.

“We had a really good pace going and obviously Eli was right there so I didn’t really have any room to back off. Then Jett started upping the pace so I decided to go with him and see what we could do,” Sexton said in the post-race press conference. “We started to get a little gap. At this track, when you’re going up against someone as good as Jett, it’s going to be hard to even think of a place to make a pass. So I decided to cruise back and bring it home. It would be stupid to go down. I’ve done that once this year in Dallas, going for a win when I didn’t need to, and I made myself look like an idiot. Today I wasn’t going to do that.”

On the surface, Jett losing a moto isn’t a big deal. Numbers-wise, it is. Lets put it this way: in Jett’s short time in the 450 Class, he has only lost a moto eight (!!!!!) times. He’s competed in 48 motos and won 40 of those motos. Further, Jett has competed in 24 races. He’s taken the overall in 22 of those races.

While we celebrate Sexton, its crazy the pace Jett is on through two and a half seasons in the 450 Class.
