While Haiden Deegan’s penalty Saturday night in Birmingham received the most attention, two other riders were penalized for the same infraction.
Per the SMX League, prior to the race, riders were instructed by race direction to choose a lane and remain in it through the split lane section. This cost Deegan the victory in the East/West Showdown as he was penalized one spot for making an illegal lane shift through a split-lane section of the racetrack that required riders to commit to a single lane.
In the 450SX main event, Garrett Marchbanks and Cole Thompson were also penalized by the AMA one position for the same infraction.
Marchbanks was moved from 9th to 10th in the final results, while Thompson went from 18th to 19th.
Here is the official statement from SMX League:
- 450 Main: RD reviewed rider #36 for a track cut in Section 14. Rider #36 crossed through the UFO track markers and was penalized one position, moving from 9th to 10th.
- 450 Main: RD reviewed rider #66 for a track cut in Section 14. Rider #66 crossed through the UFO track markers and was penalized one position, moving from 18th to 19th.
