Since 1997, the AMA has awarded the A Class (remember, no B Class rider can win this award) rider who shows the most promise as they prepare to enter the professional ranks the Nicky Hayden AMA Horizon Award. Nick Wey, who went on to have a long, successful pro career (and now has kids, Vincent and Donovan competing), was the awards first recipient.
On Saturday, following the 44th edition of the AMA Amateur National Motocross Championships at Loretta Lynn’s, the AMA awarded Team Green Kawasaki’s Enzo Temmerman with the highly coveted award.
It was an easy decision, as Temmerman won five of his six motos in the 250 and Open Pro Sport divisions en route to claiming both titles.
There were other awards handed out on Saturday you can find below:
Nicky Hayden AMA Motocross Horizon Award: Enzo Temmerman (Kawasaki)
Amateur rider of the year: Deacon Denno (KTM)
Vet rider of the Year award: Gregory “Frenchie” Pamart (Kawasaki)
Youth Rider of the Year Award: Sawyer Gieck (KTM)
Air Force Special Warfare AEGIS Award: Tayce Morgan (Yamaha)
Oakley Fastest Lap award: Deacon Denno (KTM) with a 1:48.093 in the second moto of the Schoolboy 2 (12-17) B/C Class
Denno finished 2-1-1 in 250 B for the title and 1-2-2 in the Schoolboy 2 (12-17) B/C Class for the title, while also setting the fastest lap in the second moto of the Schoolboy 2 class. It was a huge week for Denno, who missed last year’s racing at the Ranch due to injury.
Pamart won both the Senior (45+)—1-2-4 moto finishes—and the Masters (50+)—1-1-1—to claim two titles.
Gieck had a perfect week, going six-for-six in both the 85cc (10-12) and 85cc (10-12) Limited divisions.
Morgan received the AEGIS Award, presented by Air Force Special Warfare, after finished 2-2-1 in Mini Sr 1 (12-14) and 3-1-1 in Mini Sr (13-15) in a sweep of the Mini Sr classes. That award is given as a way to recognize the athlete that embodies the eight attributes that make up members of the Special Warfare unit – Drive, Stress Tolerance, Problem Solving, Team Work, Communication, Trainability, Integrity, and Physical Fitness.
