What a long, strange weekend it was for Cooper Webb at round 7 of Monster Energy AMA Supercross in Arlington.

The two-time champion entered Saturday tied in points with Chase Sexton and was coming off his first win of 2025 in Detroit. Not only that, Arlington was Webb’s World, as he’d won six of the eight previous times at the venue.

While Saturday itself was strange (we’ll get to that), it actually began on Friday, when Webb had a crash at press day.

“Obviously, yesterday was a bummer,” Webb said in the post-race press conference. “I had that little crash, get off and a little sore wrist, but, you know, it’s dirt bikes. You get back on it and you go from there. There was a lot of noise this weekend with the red plate and the talks of how well I’ve done here. You’re quickly reminded of all the hype you get when you put yourself in these positions, but that’s what you thrive to do. Overall, as a weekend, it was great. I had some of my nieces and nephews here. Overall, yeah, we rode good all day. I base my weekends now on my overall riding and I felt like all day I rode really well. So I was happy with everything.”

After 6-1 finishes in the opening two races, Webb needed some help if he were going to win the overall again at AT&T Stadium. And he got it when Sexton stalled while leading and then went down while chasing Webb on the final lap. In a strange turn, Webb was the winner again in Arlington in a scenario that even surprised him.

“I mean, I even knew going into the last one, even if I won the race, I was likely to not win, so that’s when all this craziness happened. It was like “Holy cow!” It swung a totally different way than I was anticipating.”

As the series heads to Daytona, Webb now has a five point lead in the championship. While I don’t think Webb was ever counted out of any championship—I think its the opposite, where most say “never count out Webb”—the following was asked in the post-race press conference, which I feel only gives Webb more fuel to his fire.

It always feels you’re somewhat counted out come into these championships. Does that motivate you? It seems to have happened for a number of years, but does that still motivate you, even now, even though you’re a two-time champion, but you’re still being counted out sometimes?
“Oh, for sure, I think it’s no question, rarely am I the title favorite, but like I said, sometimes rightfully so. These competitors are insane, you know? They got a lot of speed, a lot of talent, and a lot of championships themselves, but I just kind of always try to put myself in a good position. I know what I can do on a dirt bike and with my team behind me, I always never count myself out. Sometimes it’s a little annoying more than frustrating, just kind of like, “Hey guys, I don’t know why I’m not in the conversation sometimes,” but it is what it is. It definitely fires me up and keeps me in it, no doubt.”
