Cooper Webb Has Been Hiding an Injury Since Birmingham

Cooper Webb is as strong as an ox. He reminds me of Chad Reed in the way that you can never count him out of anything. I learned that long ago.

Webb still has an outside shot at this 450SX Championship, granted it’s a very long shot, but after the events unfolded last year with Eli Tomac…well we’re not counting the eggs till they hatch. He’s down 20-points on Jett Lawrence entering the Salt Lake City finale.

It’s been an absolute roller coaster watching the points unfold this past month. Webb left Indianapolis in mid-March 21-points in the hole on Jett, then miraculously the two left Foxborough three weeks later tied in the standings.

What makes all of that even more outstanding for Webb is that he’s been doing this with a torn UCL in his thumb since his heat race crash at round 9 in Birmingham. Webb put out an announcement on Instagram yesterday to come clean about an injury that he’s been dealing with for almost two months.

This injury to the UCL is known as “The Gamekeeper’s Thumb” and according to the (NIH) National Institute of Health (because I’m not a learned doctor) it’s the “injury of the ulnar collateral ligament of the first metacarpophalangeal joint”. You know what I’m sayin’?

Webb made it seem like he was able to make the most of this injury initially until he re-injured it again recently. He’s going to give it everything he’s got at the final round, but he was visibly upset after the race when the broadcast interviewed him.

We will keep you up to date if we hear any other news on this injury or how it may affect his Pro Motocross season. Since the UCL is already torn, it will need to get fixed eventually as the NIH says that it’s highly unlikely to heal on its own.
