Canuck Lost in Mesquite: Experiencing the Stars and Stripes Vurbmoto Style

The alarm clock sounds at 6:30 a.m. On any other day, the abrupt call to action of an iPhone would be an unwelcome disturbance. But on load in day of the 44th running of the World Mini Grand Prix the alarm clock is music to my ears. Literally music! I think Wes’ wake up tone was “Party in the U.S.A.” by Miley Cyrus, which World Mini 2023 will certainly be.

As soon as my feet hit the floor, the hair stands up on the back of my neck. There is no feeling like the anticipation building up to race day. Hop in the rental car and the sprawling metropolis of Mesquite, NV, is our oyster. Quick stop at Starbucks for a cup of coffee and a breakfast bite and the five-minute trip to the track is over before it starts. As you navigate the winding approach to Mesquite MX through a scenic Nevada golf course, you might be distracted by the beautiful mountains off in the distance until a motocross track catches you eye. Not just any motocross track. As you roll into the entrance of the World Mini Grand Prix, your eyes feist on Mesquite MX. Draped over a steeply banked hill, the track is a sandy combination of sweeping corning and massive yet forgiving jump. The perfect landscape for a worldly battle like no other.

The Vurbmoto crew setup shop and I can’t help but drink in the atmosphere. Literally! We had 6 or 9 beers. Beautiful scenery mixed with this badass motocross track and you can’t help but pinch yourself. This is what moto is all about. Buddies at the track getting cued up for another epic week. Like most before it is never a dull moment. Especially this week. This one is special.

Racers young and old will descend on this historic cathedral of motocross as World Mini picks up right where it left off nine years ago. A race where titans would clash on an annual basis. The mood is light throughout the pits.

Moto moms n dads set up camp for the week that will be filled with the fun and excitement that only amateur motocross can bring. As we put the finishing touches on Vurbmoto’s pit presence, the clock ticks down on the fourth quarter of loan in day. A few high fives and we load up and head out. The first day here at Mesquite is done and dusted as the anticipation continues to build. Tomorrow, we put knobbies in the dirt.
