The wildest race in amateur motocross is the Baja Brawl… and it’s not even close. The nightlife surrounding the race in Michigan—an AMA Featured Event and official Dirty 100 event—typically gets most of the notoriety, but there’s plenty worth paying attention to on the track. And last weekend might have been the biggest one yet!
Nearly 600 riders packed the gates, combining for more than 1,400 entries across three motos, and there were a few riders who had standout weekends. Using the advanced race data tracked through Vurbmoto Prospect, we dug a little deeper into who scored the most points, who did the most passing, who consistently found the fastest way around the track and who spent the most time out front.
Most Points: Jax Baker — 11,679
Nobody did more for their Prospect ranking at Baja Brawl than Jax Baker. And, while I have no clear facts to back this up, this might be the most points anyone has gathered in one weekend. Again, not a scientist, so can’t prove it. But it seems right, so go with it.
Baker lined up in six different classes and walked away with 11,679 Prospect points, the most of any rider at the event. His weekend included wins in 65cc (10-11) Limited, 65cc Open and 85cc (9-11), helping vault the Illinois native into the No. 1 spot in the Prospect National Rankings. That’s right, we have a NEW leader in the Prospect National Rankings.
Joey Vicari wasn’t far behind with 9,761 points, while Rydin Williams collected 9,376 and Raycin Kyler finished fourth with 9,200.
On the Move: Jonathan Getz — 7.8 Average Passes
Jonathan Getz was officially the busiest rider at Baja Brawl, averaging 7.8 passes per moto across Open Pro Sport and 250 Pro Sport. That was more than two passes per moto better than Jaxon Hopper, who ranked second at 5.7, followed by Jeff Jackson at 5.3.
Most of Getz’s work came in the 250 Pro Sport class, as he started 19th in the first moto and worked all the way to ninth. It was more of the same in moto 2, as he went from 25th to 10th. Overall, Getz finished 8th in 250 Pro Sport and fourth in Open Pro Sport.
Fastest on the Track: Joey Vicari — 9 Motos
This one might be the most impressive number of the weekend. Across all of his racing at Baja Brawl, Joey Vicari recorded the fastest lap in nine different motos, leading every other rider at the event. And it wasn’t limited to one class. Vicari did it while bouncing between Supermini 1 and 2, Mini Sr 1 and 2, and Schoolboy 1.
Former pro, Chris Canning, ranked second with seven motos, while Aidan Bailey, Weston Otto and Evan Witham each recorded the fastest lap in five.
It was a massive weekend for Vicari, a Michigan native. He swept Supermini 1, Mini Sr 1, Mini Sr 2 , and won Supermini 2 with 1-1-2 finishes!!!! Oh, and he also led the most laps of anyone on the weekend…
Most Laps Led: Joey Vicari — 42
Being fast is one thing. Turning that speed into time at the front is another. Vicari did both. In addition to recording the fastest lap in nine motos, Vicari led 42 laps across the weekend, easily the most of any rider at Baja Brawl. Chris Canning was second with 31, Carter Clay led 30 and Jax Baker was fourth with 29.
Put the two stats together and Vicari’s weekend becomes even more impressive: nine motos with the fastest lap and 42 laps spent out front!!!!!
