One race, two titles. That is what awaits this Saturday in Las Vegas as the arduous 31-round SuperMotocross Championship wraps up in Sin City. A unique points structure has resulted in two nearly winner-take-all scenarios entering the finale. Over the next two days, we (I) will examine the important storylines in each class.
First, the 250 Class.
The Contenders
1: Jo Shimoda | 92pts
2: Haiden Deegan | 82pts
3: Seth Hammaker | 78pts
Unlike the 450 Class, this is NOT a winner-take-all scenario. Shimoda enters Saturday in the driver seat, as he sits 10 clear of Deegan. With the final awarding 75 points to first and 66 to second, Shimoda can finish second and still claim his first career 250 championship. If Deegan wins, and Shimoda finishes third or worst, Deegan will clinch a third straight 250 SMX Championship. For Hammaker to clinch the title, he would need to win and have Shimoda finish third or worst.
Who is most likely to win the championship?
I have gone back and forth and forth and back and back and forth and forth and back on this one all week. I truly DO NOT KNOW! If this was winner-take-all, I think I side toward Deegan. But (!) that is not the case. All Shimoda must do is finish second, which is a very reasonable ask. The kicker in Deegan’s direction is Hammaker being in contention. Ham Dog is going to be full tilt this weekend, because, as mentioned, he is very much in this fight. That helps Deegan.
I you are making me pick now, I’ll go Shimoda. I have a right to change this prediction. My column, my rules. Sorry.
Will we see “fireworks” between any of the top three?
Did you watch the Salt Lake City finale just a few months ago? Well, there is your answer. Yes, yes, we do. Add in Deegan to the mix, and this could be an all-time race.
Who could play spoiler?
We saw it last week. His name is Levi Kitchen. Kitch has the speed and will certainly be in the mix. Also, Tom Vialle, who won the second a week ago in St. Louis is looking to leave a lasting impression on his final U.S. race for a while. A real spoiler though could be Nate Thrasher. While he is up and down, if he’s feeling it, he can run up front and help Deegan clinch. Buckle up, this is going to be fun.
