T-Dog’s Takes: Here Is Everything You Need to Know About the SuperMotocross Playoffs

If you’re having SMX Playoff problems I feel bad for you son, I got 99 problems and SMX info ain’t one.

Welcome to Vurbmoto and the only moto media website in the world that would start an SMX Playoff information session like that.

I keep hearing riders, fans, and people within the industry talking about how they need information about the “inaugural SuperMotocross World Championship Playoff races and we’ve got you covered.

SMX World Championship Final: Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum- September 23rd

TV Coverage:

NBC Sports will have all the action for all three races. Race Day Live will begin coverage this Saturday for SMX Playoff 1 in Charlotte at 9:30 a.m. ET on Peacock followed by racing at 3 p.m ET on USA Network and Peacock.

Coverage for SMX Playoff 2 at Chicagoland will begin with Race Day Live coverage at 2:30 p.m. ET followed by racing at 8 p.m ET on Peacock.

The SMX World Championship Final will begin coverage of Race Day Live at 4:30 p.m. ET followed by racing on USA Network and Peacock at 10 p.m. ET.

Payout

A never before seen payout of $10 million is on the line between the two classes. The top twenty in each class are those who qualify directly into each playoff race. The top twenty have had their points reset before the first round. You can see that breakdown below. Every round will feature an LCQ for each class to give a couple of riders a chance to race for the largest purse in the history of the sport. If a top twenty rider is unable to race due to injury or issues, then more riders will be taken from the LCQ to ensure a full gate.

Format and Points:

Each round will feature a hybrid track showcasing both Supercross and Motocross obstacles. The playoffs are a two moto format at each round for each class and each moto will be 25 minutes plus a lap. Riders will be scored based on the Triple Crown format.

Possibly the most radical change for each playoff will be the fact that each round the points payout will be different. At SMX Playoff 1 the points will be normal, paying 25 to the winner and so on. At SMX Playoff 2 the points will be doubled, so if you win you’ll be paid 50 points and so on. Then at the SMX Finals points will then be tripled with 75 points going to the winner.

Entry Lists

Athletes occupying positions 21 through 30 in the regular season standings automatically earn positions in the LCQ for each class at each respective playoff round. However, additional confirmations for the final SMX entry list have seen the group of LCQ participants expand in each division. In the 450cc class, injuries and other factors have led to notable exceptions that include Jose Butron (21st), Christian Craig (22nd), Lorenzo Locurcio (24th), Benny Bloss (28th), Romain Pape (29th), and Joey Savatgy (30th). Alternatively, those vacancies have allowed for the confirmations of Josh Cartwright, Jerry Robin, Jeremy Hand, Bryce Shelly, Jace Kessler, and Max Miller.
