I was thinking over the weekend about many things…
One thing I was thinking about is…why is this sport full of people who continue to rockstar people at races? Like, you’re not that cool…we all are working here and your job doesn’t make you that great nor do your social media followers…
Anyway…that’s a topic for a different day.
I was also thinking about my favorite season to ride in. Which is it? Has it changed from when I was a kid to now? I enjoy parts from every season and at the end of the day I’m riding my dirtbike, so does it really matter?
Here is why I like each season:
Spring: Back when I was racing heavily we didn’t do many arenacross races here in the midwest, so we always waited for the ground to thaw to race. Once the end of March hit it was on like Donkey Kong. I was able to debut my fresh gear that I usually got as a Christmas present and I had my bike completely fresh because I had worked on it all winter.
Summer: When I was in peak physical performance, which means I was young and didn’t get tired…I enjoyed the suffer of summer. For some reason I really enjoyed sweating my balls off and pushing myself to exhaustion. It gave me a sense of accomplishment I haven’t felt since then….only if I did well that day. If I had a bad day at the track then I just sucked.
Fall: We had an event called Mammoth East in Paoli, Indiana for many years. It was always the third week of October. Ask Ryan Sipes about it, he was always there. The track was on a ski slope, it was a long all natural track that got super rough and it was the best riding I’ve ever had the privilege to do. After the races we’d build a campfire, put on our hoodies and tell stories while dinner cooked. This is top tier.
Winter: I’ve done my fair share of arenacross racing. It’s cold. The pits are cold. Your bike never warms up. It sucks.
Now that I’ve broken it down for you…which season is your favorite to ride in?
