Playoff time! The opening round is tomorrow and we (I) are here to talk about any upsets and the recent move by Christian Craig to go to World Supercross.
Are we most likely to see an “upset” in the SMX Playoffs?
First, lets clarify a few things. The question above is in regard to the championship, not individual races. Two, let’s all agree that Jett Lawrence (450) and Haiden Deegan (250) are the favorites. Three, let’s all agree that Chase Sexton or Hunter Lawrence or Jo Shimoda is not an “upset.”
So, with all the above now clarified, I will answer the question: No!
Jett and Haiden are the only two champions (each won in 2023 and 2024) in SMX Playoffs history and I see no reason that changes in 2025. Did you see those two in Pro Motocross? Or in Monster Energy AMA Supercross (before Jett got hurt)? Could they lose races? Sure. But not the titles.
Thoughts on Craig’s move to Quad Lock for WSX?
I like it. I thought it was strange that Star didn’t put Craig on Cooper Webb’s vacant Yamaha at all this summer. There were also reports that Craig wasn’t going to race SMX for the team, either. With that said, Craig is a racer. He wants to race. His career is winding down, so why not travel the world and get a paid to do so? I could think of worse jobs.
