For what I believe is the fourth straight year (don’t fact check Slaw) Steve Matthes, he of PulpMX Hockey fame, wrangled all the animals on privateer island, put them in stadium with a ton of cash on the line and we all watched the chaos unfold. It was amazing and it streamed LIVE on the Vurbmoto YouTube channel (full show archive below if you missed it)!
To put on a production the size of the PulpMX Privateer Challenge would typically take 2-3 trucks full of people. Graphics, replay, producer, on and on and on and on. In typical Vurb fashion, we showed up with five of us—with some help on the shooting side from Mason Churchill, Ben Danko and the Race Day Live team. That’s right: VurbWes, Chase Stallo, Jason Monroe, Brandon Clarke and Jason Crane headed down to Denver last week on a tight budget and made it happen somehow. Those boys always find a way to get it done.
Before I get into the payout, let’s put some respect on Steve’s name. Sure, he ruffles some feathers (which I enjoy) and yeah, he has strong opinions on stuff (who doesn’t?) but that man bleeds for this sport. Not only doesn’t he make a dime on this race, he probably losses money. Who else does this much for the privateers of our sport?
Also, massive props to Feld for letting this race even happen. Not only do they help run it, but they provide a MOTHER FING STADIUM for these animals to be let loose in.
Also, also, massive props to the AMA for providing live timing and scoring. Yes, the same people who do the big race help do this one.
Also, also, also, massive props to YOU people for buying a metric ton of raffle tickets for this race. Yes, YOU PEOPLE, pay the purse. Not Vurb. Not Steve. It’s a credit to our lovely sport that so many people are willing to chip in and help the not so fortunate.
Also, also, also, also, a big thanks to Yamaha who has been involved in this from the start–when it wasn’t even a race–and gives Steve a brand-new bike every year to help raise money.
With all of that said, let’s get to the meat of this story: How much dinero these boys made.
1) Kevin Moranz took home the win and a cool $25,340.
2) Marshal Weltin finished second and for his efforts took home $15,140.
3) In third was THE Hardy Munoz who collected $10,900 for his efforts.
4) In all, the total purse was $108,000!!!!!!!
