Andrew Short Injured in Crash [Updated]

Former professional supercross/motocross and Rally racer Andrew Short was seriously injured on Sunday, according to an Instagram post by his wife, Jacki.

Short enjoyed a 16-year career as a professional motocross and supercross racer and collected more than 50 podium finishes and nine wins during his career. The Colorado native was also part of the American team that won the 2010 Motocross of Nations held in his home state.

Following his retirement Short competed in the Dakar Rally with Husqvarna and Yamaha, before Yamaha announced in 2022 it was no longer racing the Dakar Rally.

According to the post, Short and his family attended the Houston Supercross on Saturday but was injured riding on Sunday.

“We had a blast at the Houston Supercross yesterday, seeing all our friends. It was great to catch up and visit. Taking Hudson and Emma to the track walk was a highlight for Andrew. Hudson still thinks he can jump the finish line on an 85🙈. Unfortunately today Andrew lost the front end under braking and had a big slam. T 7,8,9 are shattered, one broken rib and bruised lungs. We’re extremely blessed and very thankful he has feeling in his legs and hands. I’m extremely thankful for the friends that helped him get to the hospital and take care of Hudson and continue to show him a great time. He has surgery in the morning, it does sound more complicated than initially thought. We appreciate all the prayers! It been a while since 29 has been hurt.

I’ll update again tomorrow,

Jacki”

We will provide an update as we have one. Get well soon, Shorty.

Update Day 3:

The amount of support and messages we’ve received is overwhelming. I’ve read so many of them to Andrew and they make him smile. Over time we’ll try and response to them all. ❤️

Andrew has had a good day, it’s been a busy day. He was fitted for his back brace and was able to get up and walk a bit with help. He sat up for a while and was able to eat a good breakfast.

Next steps are keeping the pain under control and for him to get up and move more. He’ll most likely be in the hospital for a week and after that is still being decided.

We’re still in awe that he has full movement. God sure did and does have His hand on Andrew.

Much Love,

Jacki

  1. Hang tuff buddy, I have always been a big fan of yours and know exactly what you are looking going forward. Best therapy family friends and movement. 2020 I had a 5 level rodding and fusion, it will take a awhile to feel like your old self. Wishing you all the best.

  2. Andrew,

Hope you have an awesome recovery dude, unfortunately this is one of those things that everyone fears in the sport, you’re an awesome athlete man and wish you well! Take this time to heal and don’t rush it, probably the last thing you want to do, you have a wonderful support team and everyone is here for yall. Get some rest dude!

  3. Hang in there dude, I just recently crashed and had internal bleeding was in hospital for a week. Never had major injury in 30 years of riding. I know your super tough man hang in there looks like you have a great support crew by your side.

  4. Thoughts and prayers bro. I broke my L3 and had 5 vertebrae fused together back in May and I’m still recovering with nerve damage but I can walk. It seems hopeless at first but gets better with time. It will be long road but you will make it. Keep the faith. My Dr was Karl Schmidt who did a bang up job. I’m starting TIRR for nerve damage in March. Peace brother Psalm 139

  5. Our thoughts an prayers are with you Shorty! Hopefully they have your favorite ice-cream handy for some extra calcium (Ben and Jerry’s “Coffee Coffee Buzz Buzz Buzz..” was AMAZING during my last surgery. I tried them all and it was hands down the best… Caffeine isn’t always great for bone matrix healing but its sort of a push with the calcium and worth it hahaha)!
