Canuck Lost in Mesquite: Talkin’ Bout Practice Man

All the setting up of tents and pit areas is finished. Venders are in place. As rider’s que up for staging, that all too familiar feeling washes over racers of all ages. That nervously excited sensation that you feel in your chest during cool and clear moto mornings is commonplace for all who signed up for the 44th running of the World Mini Grand Prix.

Few experiences can top heading out on a freshly manicured racetrack. On Thursday morning, Mesquite MX was in prime condition and when the clock struck eight o’clock, the sand started flying. Line selection was a key component being successful on this day. The practice laps were clicking off as the track got rougher by the minute.

An event like this cultivates more than just race results. The unmatched track time allowed these racers to get better connected to their motorcycle and that means one thing, getting faster. Afterall, isn’t that what this is all about?

After countless practice laps, it was time for the track crew to add some moisture the race surface. Grayson Townsend led the first of many qualifying races in incredible fashion. These 15-minute motos proved the be a test for some and an opportunity for others. Happen to get a bad start? You’ve got time to battle back and find your place in the motos. There were battles in nearly every class with racers fighting tooth and nail to put themselves in a position to nab at top gate pick for tomorrow. There were exceptions though, Jace Allred opened a big lead during every moto he raced while showing off an incredible skill set along the way. We’re talking whips which saw Allred getting his KTM nearly backwards.

When the dust cleared, it was smiles and it was time for the easter egg hunt which was a mad dash of youngsters who undoubtedly had a blast. All the while the second episode of “Grom Report” was being recorded. Not sure what the “Grom Report” is? Check out Vurbmoto on YouTube.

Tomorrow kicks off the championship motos. Can’t wait.

Stay tuned for more.
