Mill Creek Takes the Relay Title at Red Bull RE-MX
Twelve relay teams from the southeast tore up the Georgia clay on the Bremen Race Park supercross track on Sunday for Red Bull Re-MX. Mill Creek, representing the state of Alabama, took the title after their anchor leg made a daring pass on the final turn to take the checkered flag.
“It was great to ride as a team because it took the pressure off of us a little bit,” said Andrew Matusek, team Mill Creek. “And then to see Carter take the lead on the last turn was really cool.”
RELAY MOTOCROSS STYLE
Red Bull Re-MX is a team-based head to head relay. Twelve teams of three riders selected a Red Bull rider (Brandon Mays, Cooper Webb, Jessy Nelson and Tarah Gieger) at random to round out the fourth spot on each team. The relay starts with a Red Bull athlete followed by an A class rider, B/C rider and then work its way to the 150/80cc intermediate rider as the team anchor.
“The event was a lot of fun and something different for motocross,” said Jessy Nelson, Red Bull rider for team Mill Creek in the final round. “We were able to represent a few different teams out here and try to hand off the lead.”
Each rider took two laps on the track and once the teammate crossed the finish line the next took over the race until all four riders completed the course. Round one was a single elimination with six winners advancing to the semifinals. The winners of each heat from the semis advanced to the finals with the remaining three teams battling it out in a last chance qualifier for the fourth and final spot in the finals.
FIGHT FOR THE PODIUM
The final four teams in the finals were Mill Creek who claimed victory over Bremen after they made their way to the finals by claiming the last chance qualifier spot. Interlincs MX out of Mississippi rounded out the podium with Cycle Nation taking the fourth position in the finals.
