12 Days of Cali: Day 5/6
We failed to report in yesterday for one reason and one reason only…yesterday sucked. Aside from raining all day, it was freezing cold to boot. The highlight of the day was almost getting jumped by a bunch of locals at the L.A. Fitness club when we tried to butt into their basketball game, and a really good dinner complete with grilled chicken breast, salad, mashed potatoes and pasta. Props to Darryn on whipping up a gourmet meal and to Spangler for sitting on the couch while everyone else contributed to the cause.
While yesterday was about as productive as watching the wanna be Metal Mulishia goons in the hills hit freestyle ramps, today turned out to be EPIC. The morning started early with a quick 6 a.m. work session then it was off to Corona to meet up with Ziggy from Factory Connection. We got the tour of the FC facility, and after pinching ourselves to make sure it all wasn’t a dream we headed off to a nearby sub place for lunch. Next up was a photoshoot at the Canidae Motosport Kawasaki race shop a few miles up the road. After an hour or so of touring the shop and taking care of the shoot we
headed north to Reche Canyon for one of the most insane shoots we’ve ever embarked on.
While the rain ruined the last four days of shooting, the one benefit was a perfectly soaked soil in the hills today. This is one of the most picturesque spots to shoot in So. Cal. and to catch it on a day this perfect would be next to impossible. The hits were big, the weather was perfect and the soil was deep.
We hooked up with our temporary new roommates Darryn Durham, Matt Lemoine and Lowell Spangler a few hours before dusk. With all the supercross tracks still under water and all the motocross tracks shut down due to rain, a little free riding in the hills was the only option for the three to get back on the bike.
Spangler is preparing to make his assault on the Lake Whitney and Oak Hill after an impressive showing at Mini O’s just a few short months ago. He’s been living and training in California since leaving Florida in November and is ready to make his mark in this, his final run through Texas as an amateur.
As for Star Racing Yamaha’s Matt Lemoine and Darryn Durham, they are gearing up for round two of the East Coast Lites Series set to take place in the Atlanta Dome in just under two weeks. Both riders showed great speed in the opening round in Houston and both will definitely be podium threats once the series heads back east.
The plan tomorrow is to head back out to the hills before sunrise to get some early morning shots, then try and meet up with Travis Baker and Tommy Weeck for another EPIC section of the movie.
