On the Bubble: May 2009
Welcome to our May edition of On the Bubble. With May not only comes the resurgence of wild life, but also of Motocross in many of the northern states. It’s been a long, cold winter and the folks in the northern regions of the country are definitely itching to get some seat time in. And with Loretta Lynn and Ponca City qualifiers kicking off all over the country, there is definitely no shortage of races to sign up for.
We’ve been honing in on Ponca and Loretta qualifiers for the better half of the last two weeks, and we’re going to continue that trend throughout May. No matter what region you find yourself in, there are only two rounds of Area Qualifiers left for Loretta’s. So if you haven’t qualified, we suggest you spend this week fine tuning your suspension and get out there and make it happen.
We were able to have contributors at three of the four Area Qualifiers last weekend, so expect to see tons more race coverage from Washougal, where James Wyman trudged through what looked like four feet of mud all weekend to cover the event, Baja Acres, where Tom Cooper came out of hibernation to capture the best racing Michigan has to offer and Rolling Hills, where Christina Stickle was able to dodge the rain in what turned out to be another huge weekend in the southeast.
Believe it or not, but the Regional Qualifiers for Loretta’s kick off this month as well. Both southeast qualifiers will be held in May, including the youth qualifier in Chatsworth, GA at Lazy River on May 23-24 and the amateur qualifier in Pell City, AL on May 30-31 at the famed Mill Creek facility. Both tracks are run by some of the best promoters in the country and you can bet the racing will be top notch. The north central amateur qualifier at Spring Creek in Millville, MN will be held on May 30-31 and our own Justin Fisk has already penciled himself in to make the trip north to get the coverage, so expect some grade A reporting following that one. If you call the mid-east region of the U.S. home don't fret, because May has something for you as well. The mid-east youth qualifier will be held May 30-31 in Jacksonville, OH at the Sunday Creek facility.
On top of all the amateur racing we were also able to have a crew in Las Vegas for the finale of what turned out to be one of the best Supercross seasons in the last decade. Remember David Bulmer from ayearinmx.com two years ago? In 2007 David flew to the states from his home in England, bought a beat up motor-home and drove to every single outdoor national on the schedule. He became sort of famous for this endeavor and we are pleased to report that he’s back in the states this year to do it all again with Vurb. His first job was to cover the final SX round in Vegas and now he’s out in California gearing up for three months on the road with Vurb.
Starting May 19th, Vurb will officially be entering its satellite office, better known as Mighty Whitey, and will be traveling the country week in and week out until the final round of the outdoor nationals in September. Or at least that’s the plan. This is going to be one of the gnarliest trips Vurb has ever endured and the entire thing is going to be documented, which, by the way, brings me to another point.
We’ve been hinting around the fact that we have been working on a top secret project for the last few months and it’s finally time for the proverbial unveiling. Beginning May 25th, on top of everything you see, hear and read on Vurb, you will now have the option to get even more. More in depth content regarding both pro and amateur motocross, more videos, more photos, more news and, well, more everything. It’s called Vurb Insider and it will be a paid section of Vurb. For a measly $25 a year you will be able to triple your content intake. For example, much of the behind the scenes footage from the trip will be reserved for Insider.
All that you have grown to enjoy about Vurb will go unchanged. Multiple articles, videos, new reports, interviews, etc. will still go up on the non-pay version of Vurb as has been the norm for the past two years, but if you’re the type of person who constantly hungers for more, then Vurb Insider is just what the doctor ordered. We will go inside the lives of the worlds most accomplished motocross athletes and give you a true taste of what it’s like to live the dream. It’s going to be one of our biggest ventures to date and it is one that we feel needed to be made in order to step the company up to the next level.
Ok, enough about Vurb Insider, as we are sure you will be hearing a lot more about it in the weeks to come. On top of launching this we will also be finishing the edit and design process on our soon to be released feature film, EPIC. We’ve decided to follow this year’s newest rookie class into Glen Helen for the final shoot of the movie. This was a last minute decision that everyone on staff agreed would be the best decision. The entire movie and book will be edited before Glen Helen kicks off and the final piece of the puzzle will be added and put into production before the gate drops at Hangtown the following week. This will push the release date of the film to mid June, but is something we are sure will resonate more with everyone who sees the film.
We fly the crew out to California the week before Glen Helen, so be sure and keep up with the site to get all the pre-event content you can get your grubby little fingers on. Also, we will be in studio with the boys from DMXS radio this week in good ole’ Atlanta, so be sure and listen in.
Well, I’m sure I missed out on at least 1,000 other things going on throughout the month of May, but to be honest, I have to finish up this article, we’ve got work to do.
Until next time…
