On the Bubble: June 2009
Welcome to our June edition of On the Bubble, the feature where we give you quick a peek inside our editorial calendar heading into the month ahead.
I suppose the most logical topic to start this editorial off with would be Vurb Insider. As you know we launched a new segment of Vurb called Vurb Insider about a week ago. Before I get into my sales pitch, if you haven’t had a chance to check it out, you may do so for FREE by logging onto insider.vurbmoto.com and creating an account. We’d like to say that you won’t be disappointed, but the fact is we don’t really know you personally and you might be extremely hard to please. So we’ll just say that we hope you aren’t disappointed.
For those out of the loop Vurb Insider was created as a home for our more “magazine” style feature stories. Vurb has become successful as a news site, a place where readers can come to find out what’s going on around the country with almost up to the minute coverage of everything pro and amateur. Vurb Insider, on the other hand, is where you will find more hard hitting stories and more behind the scenes video. We’re still figuring out the content structure a bit, but have some extremely creative ideas coming down the pipe.
It’s not all serious on Inisder, though. We’ve also flagged the services of award winning radio guru’s David Izer and Kevin Kelly of DMXS radio to join in on the fun. Starting next Wednesday Insider will be the new home of DMXS radio, so be sure and log on and listen. Be on the look out for a press release with all the details coming your way early next week, as we will also be implementing an amateur show on top of the already successful pro show.
Okay, enough about Insider. This feature was originally planned to publish on Monday (big surprise, huh?) but after getting smacked in the face with the Taylor Futrell controversy, everything got pushed down the list of things to do. I won’t go into the details, but if you want to find out exactly what went down at the Southeast Loretta Lynn Regional Qualifier at Mill Creek read our story, Taylor Futrell: Just the Facts.
The big news right now is, well, everything. We are currently pulling our hair out trying to keep up with the new site, covering all the 2009 Lucas Oil Motocross Championships, every Loretta Lynn Regional Qualifier, and every Amateur National this summer. We’ve got our motor-home - equiped with five extremely dedicated journalists - traveling the country as I type. Over the last five days these lucky SOB’s have covered Round 2 of the outdoor nationals at Hangtown in Sacramento, California, hiked across the Grand Canyon in Arizona and filmed a private shoot with Andrew Short at his personal test track in Texas and are currently in route to Round 3 at Freestone Country Raceway. Expect to see a full story on all this and more later on this afternoon.
Speaking of Regional Qualifiers, we’ve got more coverage coming your way this weekend. Christina Stickel is already scouring the pits of the famed Budds Creek national track to get coverage of the Northeast Qualifier, while Tom Cooper and Ryne Swanberg are heading out to Reeed Buuud to capture all the action the Mid-East has to offer. Both regions host some extremely gifted talent so be sure and check back in for photo and editorial updates next week. Our plan is to cover the remainder of the regional events as we continue to inch closer and closer to the big show at Loretta’s.
There is no doubt that you’ve noticed more pro coverage on Vurb over the last few weeks, as well. This is partly due to our relationship with Racer X in that we film and produce all the Racer X Motocross Shows on Allisports.com. A huge thanks to both entities for their efforts put into this years show. The bar has been raised each of the last two seasons and this season has proven no different. Be sure and check out Allisports.com all weekend for live internet coverage and all the pre and post shows from each and every outdoor national. As for our coverage, well, it’s pretty simple. With how much time we spend covering the events, it just made too much sense not to enhance our pro content. Our amateur coverage will not falter one bit due to this decision, which should be apparent given our commitment to the Loretta Lynn Qualifiers. Our mission is, and has always been, to bridge the gap between amateur and pro motocross and we feel as if this is the next step in successfully completing that mission.
Our duty now is to cover these events in a manner unknown to other sites. We pride ourselves on our creativity and strive everyday to separate ourselves from the rest of the pack. We have yet to figure out the perfect formula but are getting extremely close (CLICK HERE to see Japan 4 video with Travis Steward). So if you’re looking for a different angle on the all that it the 2009 Lucal Oil Motocross Championships, consider Vurb your one stop shop.
After Freestone, the motor-home will head down south and make a stop at MTF to shoot with the most talked about rookie of the year, Justin Barcia, and then head over to James Stewarts private facility to lay another shoot down with this year's Supercross Champion (Video will be available for viewing via Red Bull and JS7.com) . After that it’s off to High Point for Round 4 of the outdoor nats.
Also on the docket this month is one of our favorite amateur nationals of the year, Mammoth. The event kicks off June 18 and runs through the 28. Ryan Walters and John Parkinson will be leaving the pro national tour in order to cover the event ,and we can’t wait to see the work they produce. Mammoth has grown into one of the premier amateur events in the country over the years and is one that we look forward to more than any other. For more info check out www.mammothmotocross.com.
We’re making a push this summer in terms of content and coverage and we would like to extend a huge thank you to everyone who believes enough in this project to lend a helping hand. Here’s to the future!
