Rookie Report: High Point
Steven Clarke (12-15-14th)
This was marked Clarke’s best finish of the year, which, not to brag, but we kind of called it. He's back on the east coast and put together two of his strongest motos of the year. This young Englishman has speed and should be able to find himself in the top 10 in the near future. However he did get a little sketchy over a double and almost killed me; I was standing on the side of the landing taking photos and I looked up and there was Scuba almost on top of me. If I didn’t run down the hill I wouldn't be writing this report, you owe me Scuba! Or, maybe I owe you for not cleaning me out? Either way, keep a look out for better results out of Clarke now that the series has moved to the rutted east coast.
Max Anstie (14-36-18th)
He has figured out his starts, which he proved by hammering down three in a row, but just needs to work a little more on his fitness. He has the speed but these longer Pro motos seem to be getting the better of him as he drops back as the race goes on. However, with that said, he has just made the jump from the B class to racing with the big boys on Saturday, so we think by the end of the year, he should be right on the pace. At Sixteen Anstie has been nothing but a breath of fresh air. He's got a long ways to go in the 250 class and if this is any indication as to what we can expect once he grows stronger mentally and physically, then watch out because this kid has champion written all over him.
Alex Martin (17-35-21st)
The youngster from Minnesota has not done as well as some would have thought, however he is much better than his results show. Alex is waiting for a break out ride; he needs to get some better starts and he would be right in the mix. His breakout will come before Millville, but if it doesn’t, look out for Martin on his home track!
Justin Barcia (8-5-6th)
After three bad motos, Barcia bounced back and looked a little more comfortable on the racetrack in High Point. Reports have said that he is suffering from some extremely painful blisters on his hands, so he is still a little banged up, but with a week off to heal, he should be looking to be back up front come Thunder Valley. Even after scoring 0 points in three motos, he's comfortably inside the top 10 for the championship and if it wasn't for his teammate Blake Wharton, he'd be the leading rookie this year.
Blake Wharton (6-6-5th)
This kid just keeps on putting in strong, consistant performances, with his worst finish being a 10th at Glen Helen. He has already been on the podium this year (in the 2nd moto at Freestone) and we are sure it won't be too long before we see him on the podium with an overall.
Tyler Wharton (21-36-30th)
Unlike little brother Blake, Tyler has had a rough go of it this year. He has not done what he had planned and things took a turn for the worse this week. In the second moto he took a hard digger, which left him on a backboard and on the back of the Asterisk medical cart. We do not have all of the details as of yet, but we do wish Tyler the best!
Ben Evans (16-14-16th)
Doing it on his own, he has been the most consistant privateer out on the track, earning points at every round. Ben needs some help and once someone takes notice of him and he gets some more support, he will be right there with the top dogs.
Weston Peick (38-32-36th)
Our hearts go out to this Californian. He's been on fire one week, and has had bike problems the next. If they can keep his bikes together, Weston is a contender week in and week out, and with all the injuries going around it wouldn't be much of a surprise to see him land a couple of top 5’s by the end of the year.
Kyle Regal (18-12-15th)
This is only his second round, but he has already improved from last week by staying off the ground. If he can figure out the starts, and continue to stay off the ground, we should start to see what this kid can really do. This kid has showed amazing potential in the amateur ranks, and he will surely have his sights set on a top 10 finish.
Darryn Durham (13-9 11th)
Double D was stoked to come home and you could tell by the way he was riding. He was really on the gas in the first moto, running around 7th before he hit the ground; he fell back to about 20th, but was still able to work his way back up to 13th. In the second moto he was on the gas and was able to put his Yamaha in 9th, which gave him 11th overall. Darryn is showing he is more than capable of top 10 finishes, he just has to put it all together.
Ben Lamay (15-33 20th)
This is the first time Lamay has been on the rookie report this summer. After Hangtown, he and the Butler Brothers parted ways and he did not make it to Freestone. He came into High Point back on his Yamaha and pitting out of the back of his own rig. This was the first round that he scored points, and if it wasn't for a crash on the second lap with Tyler Bowers, he may well have got two top 20 results. Maybe we will finally see the Ben of old return? This kid can really move when he's confident and in his comfort zone.
Vince Freise (20-18-20th)
After a surprising supercross season, Freise has had a rough go of it this summer. He has only earned points once, and that was at the first round at Glen Helen. This weekend he got a few more, but it isn’t what he is looking for. Vince has been training hard with Ryno and those efforts should start paying off soon.
