A week in Mammoth

written by John Parkinson

The roar of motorcycles came to an end on Sunday in Mammoth, in what is possibly the most beautiful venue in motocross.  It was a great week of racing, with some amazing battles, some surprises, and a whole load of drama.

The week kicked off with the mini days and the story was all Matt Bisceglia.  He dominated every class he was in, going 4 for 4.

Jesse Masterpool has undoubtably had his struggles this year; but he really stepped up his game in Mammoth and showed what he is capable of.  Jesse has had a rough year but looks to be right on pace at the right time of the year.

Cooper Webb had an up and down time at Mammoth.  He put in a few good motos but also got ran over and was banged up.  Being that he was pretty battered he showed a lot of heart and put in some impressive motos, finishing the week with three 2nd places.

Chris Alldredge managed to finish his week with a 2nd and two 3rd’s, despite fighting sickness all week long.

Cole Thompson grabbed four titles coming from the 85 14-16 classes and the 150 class.

Brady Kiesel showed up in Mammoth ready to do work as he took home some hardware; a 2nd and two 3rd’s.

Jace Owen is new to the mountain but put in some strong motos this week.

Andrew Silverstein has been plagued with injuries as of late but it looks like he is back in form and ready to go. Look for good things from Andrew as Loretta's approaches.

Vann Martin put in some good rides this week, finishing up on the podium.

The 85 7-11 class didn't prove to have any one dominant rider and it was a breath of fresh air to see Justin Hoeft come out of nowhere to take the win on the first day of racing.

The one that everyone had their eyes on last week was West Virginia's Steven Gretchen, who put in two solid rides finishing 2nd on Tuesday and 3rd on Wednesday (not too bad for his first trip to Cali).  Suzuki’s Tristan Miller also put in two good rides finishing 3rd and 4th.

Ryan Surrat took the win on Wednesday.

James Gardiner opened some eyes as he battled for the lead but had to settle for the second spot.

The 65 classes had some fast kids on the line; but in the younger division (6-9) it was all Bryson Gardner.  The kid flat out rails and he should be someone to keep your eye on as he was killing it at Mammoth.

Garrett Marchbanks did some battling with Gardner but in the end he came up a little short and finished in 2nd.

Tyler Hoeft showed what he could do both days as well, finishing 3rd.

In the 10-11 class it looked like it was going to be all Luke Purther on Tuesday as he won pretty easily with Deegan Von Losserg and Sean Cantrell in tow. But when they hit the line on Wednesday Michael Mosiman showed up ready to battle.  He was on the gas and showed the rest of the boys the way around the track.  Meanwhile Cantrell and Purther had an epic battle going on for 2nd; the two exchanged positions a number of times.  When they crossed the finish, though, it was Cantrell getting 2nd and Purther 3rd.

It was exciting when the big boys hit the track as the racing - and the drama - seemed to intensify quite a bit.  On Friday it was all 450’s and schoolboy on the track.  In the pro class Timmy Weigand had the lead for about six laps until he took a nasty spill, which gave Kyle Regal the top spot.  Regal held onto the lead for a lap but then made a big mistake of his own which allowed Travis Baker to take over.  Baker held on and took the win in moto 1 but when the gate dropped for the second moto it was once again Timmy Weigand out front.  The man on the move though was Blake Baggett. He got around Weigand for the lead to take the moto with relative ease.  Baker had the overall in the bag but ended up going down and tweaking his shoulder, which gave Weigand the gift he has been looking for, the overall and the coveted big bear trophey.

Blake Baggett was the fastest rider on the track, however, he had the same problem that he has had all year long: inconsistency.  He did win the 250s, but he should be winning multiple classes with the speed he's shown. If it seems like we've come down hard on Baggett over the last year it is only because we see his potential. He is a naturally gifted athlete that is capable of doing great things in this sport. Something we feel he will prove at his pro debut at Unadilla.

Tommy Weeck was on the gas this week and put in some solid rides.  He finished up with a 2nd and a 3rd. It looks like the old Tommy Weeck is back.

_MG_3376

Travis Baker did what he does best, be consistent.  He rode well all week and never finished outside the top 5 with two 3rd’s and a 4th.

The last moto of the week was the open pro class. Timmy Weigand was on the gas and his “young apprentice” Tyler Sjoberg was on his heels.  It looked as if Weigand was going to grab a second bear but on the last lap slid out and Sjoberg was able to get around and take the win.  Sjoberg needed a win and he got it; he was on his game all week long but had some bad luck here and there that put him out of some solid overall finishes.

Anytime Eli Tomac was on the track it was a special treat to watch.  The kid is magical at Mammoth; his lines are better than anyone else’s.  He threw down the fastest lap times of the week and won the schoolboy class along with the 250 B class.  Not only did he win, he had to fight his way from bad starts in both motos.  Tomac also rode the open class on his 250f and had his work cut out for him once again as he was about 23rd off of start and way out powered.  Eli was able to make his way through the pack and put his Honda in 3rd by the time the checkers waved.  This kid is on his game and is going full speed ahead. The rest of the intermediates better look out!

Gannon Audette came all the way from Cairo, Georgia to enjoy what Mammoth has to offer.  Not only did he enjoy it but he showed what he can do on a 450. He took both the 450 Int and Open classes.

It was a tough week for Nick Paluzzi even though you couldn't tell by his results.  He had the speed all week long, however, he hurt his shoulder at a regional a few weeks ago and was not 100%.  He finished up 2nd in both the 450 and 250 classes but on Sunday he swapped out and jacked up his shoulder more and was not able to race the main.  He is going to head back down south and get checked out again later this week.

Bryce Vallee once again came up a little short on his title run, but appears to be on the brink of reaching his goal.  It won't be long until a few things go his way and he is able to pull out the victory.  On Sunday he had troubles in his heat race and got a front flat which put him in the LCQ.  He won the LCQ but still had a bad gate pick.  Off the start he was sitting around 24th but got to work early and was able to finish 4th.  It was a good week for Vallee as he finished with two 3rd’s and a 4th.

_MG_3926

Michael Leib was on the gas all week long, but it just seemed like things did not go his way.  On Sunday though, things began to click and he was able to get on the box with a 2nd.
