Loretta Lynn's 2009: Day 1 Breakdown

written by David Bulmer / photography by Brent Stallo , Ryne Swanberg

Let’s skip the part where we tell you how magical Loretta’s is and how everyone here is one big family. Because to be honest, while this is one of the most majestic races on earth, and respect is to be given to everyone on the gate, it’s about winning titles. And one thing is for sure, these riders will stop at nothing in order stand atop the most coveted podium in amateur motocross at the end of the week.

We’re trying something different this week. Well, at least we’re going to start out trying something different and see how everyone likes it. Instead of a long, drawn out race report filled with too many words and not enough facts we’ve decided to give a bullet point breakdown of each days racing action. This will allow us to cover more races, while hitting only on the strong points, and leaving out all the fluff. So if you’re looking for a 3,000 word report on Tuesday’s racing action from Loretta’s, look somewhere else, because you’re only going to get the notable stuff here.

On with the show!

Senior 40 PlusJessePierce

· Mike Treadwell crashed on the first lap but was able to make it up to second with a final lap pass. Meanwhile, the holeshot master, Doug Dubach, was busy winning by at least 20 seconds.

250 C Mod

· Jesse Pierce took the win in this one with Conner Elliott close behind.
· Brad Allison crashed on first lap, but was the fastest rider on the track, taking 4th, milliseconds ahead of Chris Carrillo

250 B ModEliTomac

· Lance Vincent got the holeshot, but Eli Tomac overtook him in the 10 Commandments and checked out to an effortless moto win.
· Jessy Nelson had a bad start but started making his way through the pack before a nasty crash that looked to damage his right shoulder/arm.
· Michael Leib and Austin Politelli tried to make up for bad starts, but Leib crashed and restarted near the back. In the end Politelli made it up to 11th while Leib settled for 18th.
· James Justice and Lance Vincent both dropped down the field after good starts, finishing 7th and 8th, respectively.
· Grant Ransdell and Justin Summers were the surprise riders of the moto, finishing 2nd and 3rd

450 AWeeksSmith

· Les Smith took the holeshot and led for a good portion of the race before a mistake allowed Malcolm Stewart and Justin Weeks through.
· Justin Weeks didn’t get out of the gate very well but came through the field, overtaking Sunny Drake, Sean Lipanovich and a couple of others before his final pass on Malcolm Stewart, which gave him the victory.
· Sunny Drake and Shane Durham had a good battle before a mistake by Drake allowed Terren Odell to sneak through and take 5th

Vet 35 Plus

· Keith Johnson led from the drop of the gate to the chequered flag, taking a comfortable victory.
· Mike Treadwell overtook Kevin Walker early on for 2nd place, but couldn’t get near Johnson. All-time champ Walker had an easy 3rd, but will need to step it up in the remaining motos if he wants to build on his record 13 titles.
· Down the field, Kevin Cozadd and Chad Peterson had a pretty good battle going. Peterson got the best of this one as he went onto finish 8th, leaving Cozadd all alone in 10th.

85 (12-13) StockACBattle

· Josh Mosiman had the holeshot but Adam Cianciarulo overtook him in the 10 Commandments for the lead.
· Justin Hill and Jesse Masterpool followed Cianciarulo past, stalking the young Kawi rider for the next 10 minutes.
· Hill closed up but as he went for the lead he crashed, leaving it up to Masterpool to pressurise AC. On the final lap, Masterpool tried to sneak up the inside but couldn’t quite make the pass.
· Thomas Covington would end up overtaking Hill for the final podium spot.

450 B Stock_RJS7205

· Nick Paluzzi led from start to finish, winning the race by a huge margin.
· Bryce Vallee rode well, taking the second step on the podium. If Justin Starling had managed to get a good start and kept it on two wheels, he’d be well within shout of a moto victory. Starling currently sits in 3rd.
· AJ Catanzaro crashed in the first turn and didn’t return to action.

450 A/Pro Sport

· Derek Hall managed the holeshot ahead of Dean Wilson, but wouldn’t end up finishing the race. He crashed after the right-sweeper and wasn’t able to restart his motor.IMG_9975
· After passing Hall, Wilson went on to complete a flawless victory, finishing way ahead of 2nd placed Travis Baker.
· Baker had an eventful race, coming through the pack and showing some good speed. While his line through the 10 Commandments was the best we saw all day, he’s going to need much better starts in order to challenge Wilson.
· Cody Robbins would have taken 3rd place, but he crashed with two laps to go. He looked a bit dazed but otherwise seemed okay. His spot went to Shawn Rife who rode a solid race.

65 (7-11) Mod

· A five-way battle took place in this moto between Kade Walker, Joey Crown, Brandon Gourley, Sean Cantrell and Buddy WentworthKadeWalker
· Walker eventually took the win, ahead of Cantrell and Wentworth, but things could’ve been different had Crown not crashed in the back section.
· After impressing at Ponca, Tommy Maxey had a disappointing moto due to some problems with his KTM. Alec Mellick also struggled, finishing only 17th

51 (4-6) AMA 1 Stock

· Stilez Robertson continued his string of impressive rides by completely dominating the first 51 (4-6) moto.

Junior 25 PlusIMG_9252

· After pulling the holeshot over media favorites Kevin Walker and Jon Boruff, Nicholas Vaughn had a fight on his hands.
· After a few hard fought laps Vaughn relinquished his number one spot to Boruff and Walker.
· Boruff took to the lead and never looked back. Walker stalked, but was unable to make up time.
· The ride of the moto goes to Keith Johnson. After a start that put him outside the top 10 on lap one twenty minutes later he was passing for the final spot on the podium. This one is going to come down to the wire.

Schoolboy 1 (12-16) B/CSchoolboy1

· Kyle Peters and Brad Frace put on a show in this moto, battling with each other for a good five laps before finding their own space. In the end Frace got the pass and went on to win.
· Luke Renzland rode a superb moto, keeping Peters and Frace within sight for most of the race, only to tail-off near the end, finishing 5th
· Joey Savatgy had an impressive race, overcoming a bad start to make his way up from 10th to 3rd. It was a good to see the Red Bull rider back to form as he overtook Renzland and Jacob Hayes in one lap for the final podium spot.
· Other notable riders with bad starts were Justin Bogle and Dillan Epstein who did well to finish 6th and 7th, respectively.

250 A/Pro SportBaggettFutrell

· Taylor Futrell just couldn’t get a moments peace in this one. He got the holeshot, but was then stalked by Les Smith, then Jason Anderson and finally Blake Baggett.
· Futrell held off Smith, but Anderson got him mid-moto. It looked as if Anderson would go onto take the win but his bike blew up with just a lap and a half to go.
· Futrell then held the lead for the remainder of the race until, on very last jump, Baggett managed to sneak past on the line for the victory. As the two scrubbed the finish line double, Baggett was able to get on the gas a fraction of a second earlier to take the heart pounding moto win.
· Cody Robbins got the holeshot but dropped back down the field, eventually finishing in 5th.
· Lowell Spangler crashed on the first lap, restarted dead last and ended up finishing in a pretty respectable 18th.
· Sunny Drake, Tyler Sjoberg, Jimmy Decotis, Travis Baker and Drew Yenerich had an epic mid-pack battle.

Super Mini 2 (14-16)ZachBell

· Zach Bell took an easy victory in this race. He got a massive lead before a couple of mistakes allowed Jeremy Martin to close. Martin then made a big a mistake, giving Bell a comfortable win.
· Cole Thompson, Mitch Oldenburg and Dillan Epstein all got bad starts. But Thompson’s day got even worse as he wasn’t even able to finish the moto due to a faulty motor.
· Epstein was charging through the pack, and looked as though he’d catch Martin at one stage, before he slid out after the start line. This put him back to 6th, and although he put on another charge, Colt Nichols was able to hold him in order to grab the final podium spot.
· Jace Owens and Kody Kamm had a good battle, finishing in 5th and 6th, respectively.

85 (9-11) ModifiedAlexFrye

· Alexander Frye looked extremely in tact in the 9-11 Mod. first moto. He won the $100 holeshot award and then proceeded to check out on the rest of the field.
· While Frye took the win, Blake Green was perhaps the most impressive. After leaving the gate outside the top ten Green put down consistent 2:19 – 2:20 lap times (2-3 sec. faster than rest of field) to eventually move into 2nd ahead of Kawasaki’s Mark Worth.
