Vurb Cup Hopefuls 2009: Part 3

written by Brent Stallo

The Vurb Cup is the defining trophy in amateur racing, as it ignores classes and concentrates fully on the results. If you win this title, you ARE the best amateur racer in America, no ifs, buts or maybes. Last year Eli Tomac came away victorious, showing that not only has he got the speed, but he also has the consistency required to win Championships.

If you aren’t familiar with the rules, basically we take your class results from each amateur national, add them together, and then divide by the number of classes that you’ve ridden. This will give you an average number which can be compared with any rider from any class., allowing 85cc riders to stack up against 450 A Pros, on a completely equal playing field.

This year we will be announcing the Vurb Cup winner at the Loretta Lynn’s Award Ceremonies, so while everyone is celebrating, we’ll be busy tallying the results, making sure the math is all proper and correct in order to hand out the biggest prize in amateur motocross.

To build the tension a little more, we’ll be previewing (in no particular order) those riders in with a shot at this prestigious reward.

Eli Tomac

The defending champion is definitely in with a chance of repeating his victory after another successful year. It may have taken him until Oak Hill to win a title, but that hasn’t stopped him from putting in top five after top five. We were actually pretty surprised to see him at Ponca last week, thinking that he’d concentrate on solely Loretta’s, but he’s came out guns blazing in an attempt to lower his average. If he keeps it up for Loretta’s, don’t be surprised to hear us calling out Eli’s name again at the Awards Ceremony.

Zach Bell
BellVC
This Canidae Kawasaki youngster has had one of the best years of his career, even though he’s been battling with fellow Vurb Cup hopefuls like Cianciarulo and Epstein. Coming into Ponca City he had an outside shot at the title, but after three class victories, he’s right back in the mix. If he continues this form through Loretta’s, he could well be taking home an extra trophy.

Dillan Epstein
EpsteineVC
Despite not having won a title this year, Dillan has stayed within reach of the Vurb Cup by consistently getting top five results and never failing to finish a class. If he wants to win, he’s going to need to win a few motos, but it’s within his control so look for him to put on a charge.
