Gold Cup Round 1 2009: Gatorback
The 2009 Gold Cup Series kicked off this weekend, and although the track absorbed sheets of rain during practice on Saturday, Sunday could not have turned out any better. The track was in tip top shape and the competition for this series has already heated up.
Ian Trettel came out on top this weekend sweeping both Pro Classes and he did so quite effortlessly. He looks confident in his riding and after having an impressive showing at Loretta's just over a month ago, it's safe to say his premature jump into the A class has given him the experience and speed he needs to become a champion this year. Ricky Renner made his mark in the 250 A and Open A classes. He was the guy to beat in the 250 A class and due to Oscar Diaz's DNS in moto two of the Open A, Ricky went on to finish 4-1 and left with the overall. The likes of Dalton Yingling, Josh Spires, Derek Hall and Kyle Keylon were also guys to keep an eye on for this weekend.
In the B class we saw the 110 of Kyle Peters up front in both his Schoolboy and 250 Open classes. The Honda backed rider out of North Carolina rode four flawless races and took the Open overall, but slipped up in his first moto of Schoolboy which allowed the overall go to Wilfreder Guzman who finished a solid 1-2 for the overall and also won the 250 B class. Robby Renner was also on fire this weekend, unable to finish as strong as he did in moto 1 of the Open B class, his 4-1 moto finishes would place him second behind class winner Paul Farnsworth.
Michael Clarke rode a smart weekend he finished 3rd in Open Pro and snatched the over all in the Four Stroke class.
Local Floridians, Tyler Pantley and Jordan Bailey along with River Hancock out of Conway, South Carolina and Tanner Stack out of Oak Grove, Missouri all were front runners this weekend. Hancock took the over all in the 65 (7-9) and placed second in the 65 Open Class behind over all winner Tyler Pantley. Bailey finished inside the top 5, but was unable to seal the deal and take any moto wins this weekend. Grayson Graham out of Florida's neighboring state, Georgia, finished a consistent 1-1 and let the second and third place overalls go to Tyler Pantley and Tommy Maxey.
Cody Chisholm went home the overall winner in both Supermini Classes this weekend. His speed
and talent is there and he has the Gatorback track dialed in. Keep an eye out for the #32 come Mini O's. Mounted KTM rider, Colton Ford had a successful weekend in the Jr. Mini (9-13) class; he took the overall and left the rest of the pack battle over the second third and fourth place positions. His decision to sit out the last moto of the 85(12-13) Class which he had taken the moto 1 victory in, gave the overall to Keith Tucker with his 2-1 score. Kyler West and the 382 of Tanner Stack both repeated their first moto finishes and placed a solid 1st and 2nd overall in the 85 (9-11) Class, respectively.
Leah Cantrell went 1-1 in the Women's class to show the ladies how it is won, and with that speed will surely see her in the front for the remainder of the series. Brianna Mahon finished second, and props goes out to Serratia Gonzalez who finished 3rd over all this class; we also saw her banging
bars with he boys in the Supermini 2 class.
To wrap up the weekend, it was the 402 of Gage Linville who would put together two consistent motos for the overall in the 50 (4-6) class, while Joshua Gibbs would go on to stay most fluid in the 7-8 Stk class and take that overall win. The 50 Open over all went to Cullin Park who had an impressed 1-1 score and we expect to see a lot more of his speed show at the front of the pack for the remainder of this series.
The plus classes has a handful of winners for the opening round. Kenny Yoho out of Plant City, FL won the points battle against favorite local, Vince Devane. Devane's 3-1 finish would not suffice this weekend, and the Gold Cup for the Plus 30 class would go to Yoho. Vince then went on to clench the overall in the Plus 25 class, Plus 35 and Plus 40 classes. Last but not least the Plus 45 Class winner William Liles, swapped moto wins with fellow Kawi rider, Marcuz Ricketts and was able to solidify his win and take home his very own Gold Cup for this weekend.
