On the Bubble: November 2009
Where to begin? Oh, I guess first things first. Welcome to our November edition of On the Bubble, Vurb’s monthly feature that serves up our plans for the next 30 day
s.
Before we begin I hope everyone had a happy Halloween, and a great October in general. Between our Ride Day, our Unofficial Ride Day (more on this later) and the VPAC we managed to keep the hamster on the wheel for most of the month. The most unusual happening in October came with our Extremely Unofficial Ride Day. No, not the one at Birch Creek, rather the one at I-35 MX in Texas. If this sounds surprising don’t fret, most of the Vurb staff didn’t even know about it until it was already over.
Expect the article/gallery/video to come your way later today, in the mean time I’ll give you some bullet point highlights on what to expect. Helicopter, sick track, Lemoine’s new Suzuki’s, Anderson, Spangler, spilt coffee, bi-focals and Spanky.
O.K., enough living in the past. This is the section where we tell you what lies ahead, not behind. November isn’t ALL about Mini O's, you know? Yeah, we agree that most of it is, but there’s still a ton of local/regional activity happening around the country before the harsh winter closes in. One of the biggest races in the Southeast, the Pro Am Challenge, kicks off down at Mill Creek Raceway this weekend and is one of the best regional events of the year. If you didn’t know, Alan and Jamie McWilliams of Lake Whitney MX run this track, so you can expect the following: perfectly prepped track, professionally run event, super fast competition and a huge pro purse. For event info hit up their website at www.millcreekmx.com.
Next up on the docket is Mini O's. With all that’s going on in the moto world we can’t wait to see who shows up in what, on what and wearing what come mid November. If you thought last year was a crap shoot as far as rides are concerned you ain’t seen nothin’ yet. When riders like Jason Anderson don’t have a deal set in stone you know things are crazy. No worries though, things are looking up and we’re confident everything will work itself out in the very near future. To pre-enter or find out any other pressing event info hit up www.unlimitedsportsmx.com.
We’re bringing in the ‘A’ Team for Mini O's so look forward to tons of extra content in the weeks prior. Another HUGE event this month
is the Ride 4 AT at GPF (Georgia Practice Facility) going down on November 20-21 in Cairo, Georgia. Vurb along with the DMXS Radio crew will be heading down for the event and are looking forward to an unparallel day of riding at one of the most sought after practice facilities in the country. The event takes place the Sunday before Mini O's and we strongly suggest everyone go out and lend their support to Savannah and her family. For more information on Savannah, ataxia-telangiectasia (AT), the benefit ride or how to donate money please log onto www.ride4at.com.
Can’t make it to the east coast for Mini O's or the Ride 4 AT? No worries! Thanks to the die hard moto crew at Troy Lee Designs you’ve got plenty to look forward to on the left coast as well. Once a year thousands gather at LACR to race and reminisce, to hang out and party with friends and foes alike. What started out as a one day event has turned into a week long Thanksgiving holiday for some. This is the 12th year of looking forward to what has become a race like no other. It’s about heart and soul and bragging rights.
A Day in the Dirt is presented by Troy Lee Designs and Elrod Racing, hosted by the Hollywood Stunt and Film Community, brought to you by Fasthouse and is one of the most unique events in the country. Vurb’s own Ryan Walters will be on site documenting the event through video and “Factory” Andrew Campo will be there racing and putting together all the editorial. Troy Lee has put together a very cool site to help promote the event, so for any and all inquires log onto www.adayinthedirt.com/.
That’s all for what’s going down here in the good ole’ U.S. of A., but that’s not nearly all for Vurb. Our quest for world coverage begins this month as our U.K. connection, David Bulmer, heads to New Zealand for a month long journey across one of the most unique motocross islands in the world. Here’s David’s take on what to expect from his trip.
While Winter usually signals an end of racing here in Europe, I've decided to seek new climates by hopping on a plane and taking the quick 48 hour flight to New Zealand (seriously, I leave Tuesday morning and arrive Thursday afternoon!).
I will however, just be arriving in time to catch the last two rounds of the New Zealand National motocross series, as well as the NZ round of the Australasian SX series, where Chad Reed and a whole host of other top riders are currently competing.
I’ll also hope to be speaking to a load of the youngsters out there who raced in the 2009 Junior World Championships held at the Ben Townley’s favourite track - Taupo, and who may start appearing on the U.S. radar soon.
All in all, it’ll just be fact-finding mission to see how the motocross scene is progressing down in New Zealand, and how an island which such a small population is continually able to produce such top quality riders.
Th-th-th-that's all, folks. Thanks for reading and be sure to log on next month for our December edition of On the Bubble.
