Mini O's 2009: Bullet Point Breakdown
Words: Wes Williams/Brent Stallo
The morning might have started off a bit foggy and wet due to the rain that graced us yesterday, but by the time racing started around 2pm the weather had warmed into the 80s, and the track had taken perfect form.
· Johnny Moore and Ian Trettel jumped out to the early lead with Gavin Fath, Lance Vincent, and Eli Tomac within the top five. Robbins, Starling, Sjoberg, and Lettieri inside top 10.
· Trettel made quick work of Moore and moved into the lead at the end of lap two.· Beginning of lap four, Trettel stretches to a five second lead and Tomac finally makes the pass on Johnny Moore to the 4th spot.
· Lap Six: Gavin Faith begins tightening in on Trettel, now within 3 seconds. Tomac makes pass on Vincent into 3rd place.
· Lap Seven: Tomac is only 5 seconds behind Trettel, and is quickly closing in on Gavin Faith. Meanwhile, Trettel once again stretches a strong lead. Robbins moves into 5th place..
· Finish: Trettel, Faith, Tomac, Vincent, Robbins
Conclusion: Trettel looks extremely fast and smooth, as does Tomac. If these two start together we will see a knock down drag out battle.
· Grant Ransdell took a huge holeshot followed by Justice and the rest of the pack. By the beginning of lap 2, Ransdell and Justice already had a 5 second lead..
· Lap 4 saw Blake Dungey move into 3rd, however quite a ways off of Justice in 2nd, who sat about 5 seconds behind Ransdell.
· Finish: Ransdell, Justice, Dungey, Cochran, Potter
· Fast Lap: Grant Ransdell 53.385
Conclusion: Loretta Lynn’s Runner-up Grant Ransdell looks to have gotten it together tremendously. Extremely smooth and nearly unrivaled, he rode to an easy moto victory. Blake Dungey also looks really good in his new Fox gear.
· Savatgy, Peters, Goerke, Cantanzaro, and Rodriguez got the starts they were looking for. Gannon Audette, however, did not and was way back.
· Top three were very close, although Summers in 6th looked to be making quick progress to the front.
· Savatgy and Peters stretched to a 5 second lead over 3rd.
· Savatgy ran off the track on Lap 4 due to a bike failure, handing the lead over to Peters, with Goerke taking over the 2nd spot seven seconds behind.
· Rodriguez, Summers, Cantanzaro had a heated battle and slowly crept up on Goerke.
· Rodriguez closes in on Goerke, almost running into him in a few instances, and nearly makes the pass.
· Finish: Peters, Goerke, Rodriguez, Summers, Cantanzaro
· Fast Lap: Kyle Peters 53.875
Conclusion: Savatgy wants to win really, really bad. Peters looks to be on par despite his recent injury after returning from Australia. Overall, B class…WOW.
250 B Stock Div. 3:
· David Buller, Nicolas Leocata, Jessy Nelson, Jarett Pesci, and Justin Bogle take the early top 5.
· Beginning of lap two saw Jessy Nelson into 2nd, with Justin Bogle moving into 3rd. Bogle soon made pass on Nelson into 2nd, and was very close to Buller out front.
· Bogle tripled past Buller to take the lead, while Nelson worked in 3rd making a few mistakes.
· Nelson finally made the pass on Buller in the same spot as Bogle, but by that point in time he pretty far off the #891 machine.
· White flag lap had Bogle 6 seconds in front of Nelson, followed by Buller, Pesci, and Williams, with the finish in that order respectively.
· Fast Lap: 53.451 Justin Bogle
Conclusion: While not riding underneath the Factory Xtreme Team Green Rig (which is now Rockstar Xtreme Suzuki), Bogle looks
like he can have a handle on this intermediate class. He looks strong and confident, which is going to be necessary once these divisions join up together.
· RJ Hampshire and Dakota Robbins get out front, with Caleb Gaines moving into 2nd halfway through the first lap.
· Midway through the 2nd lap, Jerek Balkovic moved into 3rd place, and Gaines took it into 1st.
· Balkovic fell back giving 2nd, 3rd, and 4th to Hampshire, Robins, and Chisholm, respectively.
· Chisholm moved into 2nd, although a distant 8-10 seconds off of Gaines.
· Finish: Gaines, Chisholm, Hampshire, Balkovic, Robins
· Fast Lap: Caleb Gaines 56.971
Conclusion: Gaines and Chisholm looked to have a strong pace for the Supermini class.
· Cianciarulo, Plessinger, Owen, Alix, Barr out front by the end of Lap 1
· By the middle of the second lap, Cianciarulo already had a commanding 5 second lead, which he stretched to nearly 10 seconds by lap 4, while Plessinger and Owen stayed very close to one another.
· Fast Lap: AC 52.938
Conclusion: Despite minor track work, AC could’ve won B class according to his lap time. Enough said.
Supermini 1 (12-15) Div. 3:
· Covington goes down on start and allows the pack of Jacob Baumert, Colton Ford, Cooper Webb, and Jordan Smith to take the lead.
· Webb moved into second by the end of lap 2, although Colton Ford didn’t allow Cooper to keep the position for long; the two go back and forth numerous times, while Jesse Masterpool moved into 5th
· By lap 4, Covington came all the way back to 7th, while Webb tried to hunt down Baumert, with Ford, Masterpool, and Smith following.
· Masterpool goes down.
· Last lap Webb made a very tight pass for lead with lap traffic mixed in. Incredible move
Conclusion: Still in awe over AC’s laptime in Division 2. While Webb definitely wants to win, this class is going to be tough.
85 9-11 Div 1:
· Kyler West and Chase Bell get out front, but Bell takes the lead early in lap 1. Kade Walker takes a spill in the whoops and is out of the race.
· Brandon Gourley moves close to Bell very quickly, and started to apply pressure immediately.
· Ryan Surratt, in 4th place, goes into attack mode, and tried to make his move on West to get inside
the top 3.
· Gourley and West go into intense battle on last lap, with West coming out on top for 2nd place.
· Fast Lap: Chase Bell 1:02.018
Conclusion: Zach Bell, who is out with an injury, must be giving his little brother Chase some good advice.
85 9-11 Div. 2:
· Mitchell Harrison grabbed the holeshot, with Kenny Wentworth and Stephen Gretchen in tow.
· Wentworth took a short-lived lead over Harrison, who quickly got back to the front through the backline rhythm section.
· Gretchen and the 4th spot of Ashton Hayes were in a heated battle
· Wentworth blockpassed Harrison over the finish line, which pushed the #29 of Harrison back to 4th place.
· Gretchen moved past Wentworth, taking the lead.
· Gretchen, Wentworth, Hayes, and Harrison all separate and settle into their own paces and finish in that order.
· Fast Lap: Gretchen 1:04.062
Conclusion: This might’ve been the best battle we saw today, but they are considerably off the pace of division one.
85 9-11 Stock Div. 3:
· Tristan Charboneau took the early lead with Donny Brown close behind.
· By the end of lap two, Charboneau and Brown took a solid lead ahead of the rest of the pack.
· Charboneau had a nasty crash after the whoops, and although he got up immediately, his bike was mangled. He was still able to continue, but far back.
· Lead goes to Donny Brown, followed by Henry Miller, Hunter Chandler, Chase Marquier, and Jacob Williamson. They finish in that order.
· Fast Lap: Tristan Charboneau 57.514
· Conclusion: Much of this pack put in quicker lap times than the rest of the divisions. That certainly says something.
Women 12+:
· Kaise Creson takes an early and commanding lead over Serratia Gonzalez and Leah Cantrell. Brianna Mahon takes big spill coming out of the whoops.
· Leah Cantrell starts to pull in on Gonzalez, but Creson is stretching out her lead even farther.
· While the top 3 seem to have the same speed around most of the track, the whoops are proving to be the main separator. The running order remains the same.
· Fast Lap: Kasie Creson 1:03.705
· Conclusion: Gonzalez needs a good start and we could potentially see a good battle between her and Creson.
Plus 45:
· Earl May stretched it out early over the seven man pack.
· Mark Beamer fought throughout the moto to keep ahead of John Camelio. Their lap times were strikingly similar.
· Fast Lap: Earl May: 59.319
· Conclusion: With a lap time nearly eight seconds faster than the rest of the pack, May should have this one in the bag.
· Early leader #531 Noah McConaly goes down hard after crashing in the whoops on lap one.
· John Paul Tortorigi of Alabama takes over for McConaly and built a comfortable lead by the third lap.
· Number two rider Jesse Pierce keeps Tortorigi in his sights throughout and made a huge push on the final lap to nearly take the win.
· Fast Lap: Jesse Pierce 57.339
· Conclusion: Pierce vs. Tortorigi should be a heavyweight battle in the main event.
· Brad Allison grabbed the holeshot and never looked back on his way to an easy win.
· Solid ride out of Colton Mcleod in this one as he managed to push forward on lap three to overtake Anthony Ellison and the number two position overall.
· Extremely impressive ride out of Cody Rowe, who after a bad start rallied to third just behind Mcleod.
· Fast Lap: Cody Rowe 58.527
· Conclusion: With both Novice divisions hosting similar lap times the main event should be one to write home about.
51 (7-8) Stock Div 1:
· Cole Williams has never made it on the Vurb radar, but let that be the case no longer. This 50cc rider is a maniac. He tore up D1 of the 7-8 class, jumping everything that a 50cc has no business jumping. However, with a 1:20 lap time he will have trouble hanging with the older fellas’ in Division 2.-stock-div-1.jpg)
· Kevin Cabanzo and Seder Martin stayed within a ropes length throughout the moto and finished in the two and three spots, respectively.
· Fast Lap: Cole Williams 1:20.286
· Conclusion: How have we never heard of this Williams kid?
51 (7-8) Div 2:
· #56 James Shockey went down while pushing for the lead ½ lap in.
· Logan Leitzel and Jordan Bailey proved to be in a class all their own. Leitzel led early, but was unable to do the big double in the middle and was passed by Bailey. The two stayed close but the double proved to be the ultimate separator.
· Dawson Driscoll, James Shockey and Cullin Park kept things interesting with a tight battle for third.
· The top five was as follows: Bailey, Leitzel, Driscoll, Shockey, Park
· Fast Lap: Jordan Bailey 1:10.817
· Conclusion: Baliey and Leitzel will be a force to be reckoned with.
Open A ProAM Stock:
· Gavin Faith took the holeshot with Trettel in the 2nd spot. Lettieri, Robbins and Devin Reed round out top 5.
· Eli Tomac once again suffered from a not so good start, sitting back in 14th place.
· Lap three sees Trettel take the lead from Gavin Faith, with Robbins moving into 3rd past Lettieri.
· Lettieri starts moving backwards, getting passed by Rossi and Sjoberg
· Trettel begins the quad- triple section next to the spectator areas. A feat that hasn’t been done too much yet today.
· By the last lap, Tomac makes his way into 9th place past Lettieri and right behind Starling.
· Fast Lap: Ian Trettel 51.975
· Conclusion: Trettel just put his stamp on the pro class. After quite a few on and off years, it’s safe to say the #119 Suzuki came here to make a statement, and so far he’s preaching that statement loudly.
Girls (9-15):
· This looks to be the biggest girls class we’ve ever seen. It’s evident the WMA has played a huge role in getting the young ladies riding dirtbikes.
· Amanda Brown and Brinsley Dyess take a quick lead over the rest of the pack, with Christina Older and Taylor Higgins in pursuit.
· Dyess tries relentlessly to make pass on Brown, and eventually does so underneath the Redbull Arch.
· Dyess is able to roll through the lap traffic much smoother than Brown, which stretches her lead out for the remaining laps.
· Fast Lap: Kylie Fastnacht 1:03.745
85 12-13 Stock Division 1:
· Cianciarulo, Masterpool , Alix and Webb all got great starts at the front, with AC in the #1 spot.
· AC looked extremely fast and smooth, but put no time on Masterpool or Webb.
· Webb would eventually get all over the rear fender of Masterpool, trying everything possible to get around and get a shot at running down Cianciarulo.
· Lap 5 still sees the group within 2.5 seconds of each other, with Webb putting extreme pressure on Masterpool, who is right on AC.
· Fast Lap: Cooper Webb 57.315
· Conclusion: Incredible race. It’s apparent that AC is going to have competition all week long.
85 12-13 Stock Division 2
· Colton Ford, Plessinger, and Covington take on the very last race of the day.
· Plessinger, who is starting to get quite tall on his 85, put in some creative lines to nearly pass Ford out front, but was kept at bay. Covington sat tight within striking distance hoping that he could capitalize if any mistakes should happen.
· Covington began taking some outside lines to inch up on Plessinger, and finally made an inside pass. At this point in time, less than three bike lengths separate these top three.
· Covington crept up on Ford with three corners to go, made a mistake, but pushed it hard down the last straight, giving him a slight advantage going into the last corner. This allowed him to take the win.
· Fast Lap: Thomas Covington 57.952
· Conclusion: Although slightly slower than Division 1, this division hosted an absolutely insane race. The mains for the 12-13 class are going to be epic.
