Steven Clarke Talks...

written by David Bulmer / photography by David Bulmer , Richard Blyth

This weekend Vurb managed to catch up with Steven ‘Scuba’ Clarke at the O2 Arena before he raced the London Supercross. Scuba talked about injuries, motocross of nations, the up-coming supercross season and also what he thinks about his west coast rivals...

How was Liverpool last weekend?
It was good, I had some good rides. Crashed a few times but wasn’t too bad. I came away with a 1st, 2nd and a 3rd. Just rode good really, and I’m going to try and pick that back up again this weekend, without the crashes.

Do you feel there is more pressure riding in England or America, seeing as you hardly ever ride in England?
I don’t really think about the pressure, I don’t let it get to me. I can’t honestly answer that, but if I had to say something, I’d say England because I don’t come back very often like you said, but when I do, I've got to do good really.

The season starts soon in America, how do you think you are going to do?
Well I don’t know how I’m going to do, but I’d like to get top 5s, top 3s, maybe even win one of the Supercross’s. Just have a nice solid year, stay healthy and consistent and see where I get.

Have you been paying attention to the Supercross that’s been going on, what do you think of the riding so far?
The west coast is joke! There’s only three or four fast people to be honest. I wish I was riding West coast just because I know I could do really well. Then again, if I do well in the east coast, at least I can say I beat all those factory riders can’t I?

Is it something you’ve thought about riding west coast, moving to CA or do you prefer GA?
I do prefer to the East Coast because the tracks are better, tacky and they aren’t hard pack like they are on the west coast. But I wasn’t quite ready this year because I broke my wrist and stuff so I wasn’t quite fit enough to ride the west coast yet, but maybe next year we’ll see.

And how is the wrist feeling?
It’s alright now. I stopped wearing my wrist brace today actually. In one of the practices I just tried it and it doesn’t hurt anymore so hopefully I’m 100% now.

Rumour is you might be riding a 450 outside?
Well it all depends on how I do in Supercross really. If I have a good supercross season, and I’m up there then I want to try and be competitive in the Lites for the outdoors as well. Try and get my name recognised as doing good. But if I have a bit of a mishap in the supercross or something doesn’t quite go my way, then I might try and pick it up in the outdoors on the 450 and try and get some wins!

Does the MXDN team have any bearing on that? I know you were close to being picked this year...
This year was a bit of a bummer really because it was down to me and a couple of other people, Swordy (Stephen Sword) and (Shaun) Simpson. If I hadn’t of broken my wrist and I’d have gone to Landrake, they’d have probably picked me because I was riding so good then. This year, I would love to get picked whether it’s for Lites or 450s it doesn’t really matter to me, a bike’s a bike. I just get on and ride it. Anything y’know? So, we’ll see. I would love that, love to represent England, I know I can do good, especially out there because I ride those tracks all the time and I’m used to the climate and everything. It’d be nice but I can’t make their minds up can I? All I can do is ride my best and hope that they pick me.

Thanks Steven, everyone at Vurb wishes you the best in the up-coming season.

Oh my god, west coast is a joke...? If Scuba was riding the West coast, I'd rather bet my dollars for him to finish outside the top 10 than inside it. Big words from a guy who got beaten by all those "West-Coast Jokes" in the nationals last year. I cant wait you proving me wrong, Steve!

That is an ignorant statement to make of him. There are about 8 guys in west that consistently beat him outdoors in 09 but I guess they aren't fast...

chase, your comment is a joke. Nobody said they could beat him, they just said that everyone who he thinks is a joke could beat him easily.

hey OUCH and the rest of the people who drink HATERADE, how many of you guys got a top five in supercross in your whole life??? how many of you have qualified for a national or sx... my bet is not many if none! Scuba is a great guy, super nice, and confident... he's not fluffing anyones pillow. he's shooting from the hip and tells it how it is. i think you guys are a bunch of faggots!!! he's out there rippin on a pretty much privateer ride, with not the best suspension and still doing a great job. now with a little break in his riding, and some confidence coming off the london sx... you better watch out! and yeah his girlfriend is hotter than your fat pig girlfriend... faggot??? i think not... go pound out some laps on your video games you thumb jockey.

haha brandon! now who is using the HATERADE? do you have another word in your vocabulary other than faggot? as b-rad said, nobody said they could beat clark, but clark did say the west was a joke. therefore, everyone is just calling him out. chill fella, that is, if you are a dude?

I personally think it's good for scuba to have some confidence going into the east coast... he's always been just under the radar and I think he just might be able to back those words up this season. Also I don't believe he was calling out the top guys from the west... you have to admit, after the top five in qualifiers the lap times drop DRASTICALLY.
