Introducing: Adam Conway
Adam Conway has been trying to find himself amongst the amateur national field since 2006. After contending the 2008 March nationals and the World Mini, Adam is confident that he has the speed needed to break into the top 5 of the intermediate class. Speed is only part of the equation, consistency, fitness, and mental are the key elements that Conway has recognized as being paramount in taking it the next level. Adam is on a program, has the smarts, 4.0 GPA, and is training with a ton of heart in effort to make an impression at Loretta's in 2008.
When did you get introduced to motocross?
I was 5 years old and my dad bought me a JR50. I rode it every chance I could and then when I was 7 I got a KX 60 and started racing locally. My first race was at an Arenacross in Fallon, Nevada. I have been obsessed with racing ever since. It took me a while to find my speed, but once I got on 80s I started to win locally.
When was your first amateur national?
I raced the Dodge [Amateur National] in 2006 and made it into five mains. I struggled to break out of the mid pack and that is when I truly recognized what it takes to compete at a national level. It was a real eye opener and that is when I decided that I wanted to pursue a career in motocross.
You made it to Loretta's in 2007, elaborate?
I raced the MX Lites Schoolboy class. My first moto did not go so well. I went down and finished 39th. In my second moto I got a dead last start and worked my way up to 18th. This helped a lot because I gained confidence and belief heading into the final moto. In the last moto, I was riding well and closing on the top 10 when I went down. I couldn't get my bike started and I left Loretta's with a 31st overall. I learned a lot from the experience, I know how crucial consistency and mental strength is now, and I have been able to apply that to my program for 2008 and it has started to pay off.
You are home schooled and on a program, tell us about your daily grind?
I work with Andrea Leib with my schooling and I currently have 4.0 GPA. Working with the Andrea at On Track Learning Solutions has been instrumental in me implementing a true program and continuing to focus on my education. I road bike twenty miles a day, and mix that up with some running. I put in three to four 20 minute motos everyday and then hit Gym for 2 hours during the evening. I ride with Aaron Harvey, Nathan Tiearney, Adam Jones, and Mike Mason. I have a private track, but try to get down to Hangtown as much as possible. Right now, I'm very focused on my starts, that is what has been killing me and I feel that if I can get off the line I will be able to do battle up front in the top five.
What's next on your calendar?
I will do the Northwest regional at Honeylake and hopefully I won't have to go to Glen Helen for the Southwest regional. After that, I will focus on Mammoth and then it's all about Loretta's.
Do you have your future plans mapped out?
I plan on going A after Loretta's and the moving into pro nationals in 2010.
