Industry Insider: Andrea Leib

written by Andrew Campo

In order to compete at the top of your class in amateur motocross you have to make a lifestyle commitment. Young athletes must be able to find balance between training, travel, school, and social activities in order implement a foundation that will allow them to grow consistently with the highly competitive amateur national field. Let's face it; the life of a devoted am national contender is far from ordinary. Often times the road becomes home and your typical environment of attending school Monday through Friday and hammering out homework over the weekend just isn't in the cards.

Andrea Leib of On Track Custom Learning Solutions can relate better than most. Andrea's son Michael Leib is that kid; the kid who has defined his goal in life with finding success in the professional ranks of motocross. This decision that is supported by his family has helped to pave the way for Andrea's vision behind On Track.

Living in the sport has brought to light the necessity of a supporting educational outlet. Passion, determination, and experience are the elements that built the foundation. Future and success are the goals that are worked towards and Andrea Leib is the woman that deserves tremendous praise and recognition for her efforts.

Andrea Leib is a certified teacher with over 20 years of experience in education, and Master's degree in Educational Counseling. An advocate of learning success, her goal at On Track is to recognize individual learning differences in order for students to have a more positive educational experience.

On Track can help you fulfill your educational needs by customizing an educational program for your student based on their individual learning style, provide private instruction and offer guidance counseling to students.

The goal at on track is to help students attain success academically while pursuing their personal dreams. Given the opportunity, academic success is not only possible, it is also gratifying for students and parents alike.

andrea Leib.JPG What is your history within the sport?
I became involved in motocross back in the late 1970's while going to the track with my high school boyfriend-Don Leib!  Don was one of the track champions from Englishtown, NJ where we are from.  Although Don never had the opportunity to further his motocross career, our son Michael started racing when he was 8, the rest is history.

Bring us back to the days when you began to brainstorm in regards to seriously implementing this program.
I remember when Michael was in 5th grade in public school, where I was working at the time, and Don told me that I would need to seriously consider home schooling Michael due to the race schedule that they were going to have.  I thought he was out of his mind!

At that time the only home schooled people I knew hunted coyotes and ate them for dinner, we lived in the mountains back then.  Don was right though, the more school Michael missed, even with my school connections, the more this was not only a consideration, it was a necessity.

When did you officially start to offer your services?
I began On Track in 2000 at the grass routes level; I would tutor students at the nationals so that they would get their work completed by the time they had to go back to school.  This evolved over the next couple of years into a menu of educational options based on the needs of the students that I had worked with at the track.

Describe your program and options?
There are several options to choose from since I believe that success is best attained through the implementation of various options that take into consideration one's learning style, circumstances, and future goals.

The On Track Virtual Academy is being launched as we speak.  This is an internationally accredited program. I have chosen a curriculum that is state of the art offering a blend of text based and online material that focuses on the "Big Idea" theory of education, perfect for how racers minds work. This option provides an engaging online learning environment with the capability to have an On Track virtual classroom so we can interact with one another. I love this part- a real class room with cameras and microphones so we can be truly connected in order to have assemblies, demonstrations, and complete with a white board, old-school chalkboard!

The On Track Private School is a successful option for students who prefer to complete their studies through the use of textbooks in combination with online courses if they so desire. Many of my students have graduated with this option and have gone on to college with great success. All On Track programs come complete with teacher support from one of the On Track Learning Coaches.

The High School Equivalency Diploma program is an option that provides an internationally accredited high school diploma to students who have completed the 10th grade and want to focus on their future career 100%.  If they are under 18 years of age the consent of a parent is a requirement.  This is an excellent option for students who are turning pro and need to accelerate their educational plan.

Outside of Michael, who was the first rider that you started working with?Michael Leib.JPG
Blake Baggett was my first student other than Michael and our daughter Alex.

Blake used to come up and spend the night with us when we lived in the San Bernardino Mountains.  We would get as much schoolwork done as possible and during recess Michael and Blake would build bike jumps. LOL!

Who needs On Track?
Over the past 7 years that I have been involved in distance learning I have found that the education that students are receiving through the On Track programs has been better than the education they would have received in public school.  I know that is a bold statement so I will clarify this by also stating that the students I work with are not your typical students, they do not fit into the cookie cutter portions of the big system.  That is what I am passionate about.  Through my program I fit the educational plan to the student in order for them to be successful in school and it will follow them into their future.

That being said, if students and parents are looking for an educational option that allows for true learning to occur within a flexible environment that allows for success with the support of an adult at home willing to sign our Team Contract, than On Track is for you!

What's next for On Track?
As a new non-profit corporation, On Track Custom Learning Solutions, Inc., is also in the process of securing educational grants so that we may be able to raise capital for that mobile school house we have been dreaming about or the funds to supply students with computers.

Can you give your personal opinion on the community as a whole and the apparent need for education resources?
The need to provide educational resources is huge!  I have been fortunate to have the support of people within our industry who truly care about and recognize this need. I am grateful beyond words since it has provided a stage for me to address this need. The responsibility of attaining and completing an education should not be a question or an opinion. I have tried to contact factories and sponsors in order to begin a much needed scholarship foundation for families who do not have the financial means needed to enroll into a program.  Without the support of teachers, counselors, and a Director, it is very challenging to home school on your own.  Many dedicated parents area very successful at this and they deserve applause.  However, many students fall through the cracks and there is no accountability for this when it happens, and it happens way too often.

I am seeing a shift and am happy to say that some of my new students this fall came in with scholarships from sponsors, which tells me we are all getting on board one page at a time.

What is one the greatest accomplishments to date that you have earned through On Track.
First and foremost having both of my children graduate with great grades through my program was my proudest moment.

In addition, I was the judge for the Air Nautiques Essay Contest at Loretta Lynn's this month and it was such an honor to be a part of this event because it demonstrated to the greatest in our sport and their families the importance of an education by awarding the winner a $2500 scholarship.  I read through some amazing stories addressing the topic; "How I Spent My Summer Motocross Vacation" and it became apparent that there couldn't be just a 1st place winner so I added in a 2nd and 3rd place winner and sponsored these winners myself.

Nico Izzi.jpgWho are some of the students that have found success in your program?
After 7 years I have graduated over 100 students and currently have 120 students enrolled around the country.  All of them are winners to me, I especially have to commend Scott Simon and Ryan Mills for finally getting serious and getting the job done! Successful students include Tyler Wharton, Blake Wharton, Trey Canard, Nico Izzi, Hunter Hewitt, Tyler & Kylie Villopoto, Joey Savatgy, Landon Currier, Randy DiBartolo, Vince Friese, Sean Lipanovich, Kyle Regal, Sean Hackley, Sara Price, Ian Trettel, Tyler Sjoberg, Chris Johnson, Andrew Silverstein, Brady Kiesel, and of course Michael Leib who graduated a year early!!!

What message would you like to send to the parents and supporting sponsors of the industry, if any?
I feel that when it comes to the total success of our children we need to know that we have done all that we can to provide them with the proper tools to achieve their goals on and off the track.  Education is a piece of this puzzle for the racers who sacrifice in so many areas so that they can go to the next race.  Let's wok as a team and send them totally prepared.
